CLEVELAND – Rochester earned its first league victory of the season when UR defeated Brandeis, 3-1, in Round Robin #1 of the University Athletic Association. The Yellowjackets are 11-7 overall, 1-2 in the UAA. Brandeis is 7-6 overall, 0-3 in the UAA.
 
On Saturday, Rochester lost to third-ranked Emory University and 25th-ranked Chicago, both by 3-0 counts. This time, the Yellowjackets won a tight first set, 25-18, lost a close second set, 25-21, squeezed out a 26-24 win in set three to take a 2-1 lead, then won the match with a 25-17 win in set four.
 
Rochester hit .273 as a team, sparked by a .448 performance in set one and a .306 result in set three.
 
Beth Ghyzel had a team-high 13 kills, 11 assists, and 12 digs. Alara Kocak had 11 kills and five digs. Clara Martinez had eight kills. Allie DeRubertis had four.
 
Renae Lapins had 29 assists and eight digs. UR's overall digs leader was Courtney Vidovich with 16. Sara Apanavicius matched Ghyzel with 12. Lydia Barnard contributed nine.
 
Rochester had nine team blocks. Megan McHugh had four (two solo, two assists). Martinez had three. The Yellowjackets registered seven aces, two apiece by Ghyzel and Lapins.
