#19 Rochester Stays Hot In 6-0 Win Over Union

The 19th-ranked University of Rochester field hockey team put on an offensive display in a 6-0 shutout victory over Union College in Liberty League action on Sunday afternoon.

The Yellowjackets win their fourth straight game and move to 11-3 on the season and remain perfect in conference play at 5-0.  Union drops to 6-7 overall and is 1-4 in Liberty League play.

On senior day, senior Claire Dickerson led the Yellowjackets with a career-high seven points, coming on three goals and one assist.  Juniors Jennifer Lee and Nancy Bansbach and senior Olivia Denny each scored the other goals while Colleen Bansbach, Maillie and Maya Haigis recorded assists for UR who held the Dutchwomen without a shot in the game.

After four minutes had elapsed in the opening half, a heavy rain storm with some strong winds blew through the Rochester area, halting play for approximately 30 minutes.  Prior to the stoppage, Union had controlled most of the possession in the opening minutes, but was unable to break through for a shot attempt.

Dickerson scored a career-high 7 points.

The delay gave UR time to regroup and generate an offensive gameplan which was effective against Union, to the tune of earning 20 penalty corners and 28 total shot attempts.

In the 16th minute, Lee got the scoring started when she tapped in a cross pass from Dickerson who broke in alone along the left side of the circle.

Dickerson netted her first of the game at 30:18, slapping in a backhand from the center of the circle six yards from the cage, coming off a pass from the endline by Bansbach.

Just 35 seconds later, Dickerson scored again, sliding a rebound attempt past Union starting goalkeeper Heather Poisson.

Bansbach completed the Rochester first half scoring when she converted a rebound opportunity off her own tip attempt in close on the right side of the circle.

Denny made it 5-0 Rochester just two minutes into the second half when she was left alone at the left post after inserting the ball on a penalty corner to Maillie at the top of the circle.  Maille then pushed a shot towards the left side of the goal where Denny was there to score her sixth of the season.

At 38:55, Dickerson completed her hat trick by blasting a hard shot from the left wing 10 yards out to the right side of the net, beating relief Dutchwomen keeper Mary Beth Rudolf.

Union did have a couple of nice defensive saves, keeping Rochester off the board even further, with Jenna Smith recording a DS while Quinn Relihan made two stops on the line for the Dutchwomen.  In goal, Poisson made eight saves and allowed four goals while Rudolf made four stops and surrendered two goals.

Rochester senior goalies Kiran Sundaram and Gabrielle Cantley each played a half and were not tested in the cage, recording Rochester's seventh shutout of the year.

The Yellowjackets return to action on Friday at 4 pm when they host 16th-ranked Skidmore in a battle for sole possession of first place in the Liberty League.  Both squads currently are 5-0 in league play.
