CANTON, NY – For the first time in school history, the University of Rochester went unbeaten in Liberty League play, finishing 7-0 after a 6-2 defeat of St. Lawrence University on the road Sunday afternoon.
Â
The #19 ranked Yellowjackets (13-3 overall), matched their season high output for goals in a game with six, fending off a scrappy Saints squad which falls to 5-10 overall and 1-6 in the conference.
Â
St. Lawrence was able to strike first in the seventh minute of the game, with Alex Clark tipping in a shot from the top of the circle by teammate Melissa Grosshans.
Â
Rochester responded with a goal from
Nancy Bansbach at 13:40, with the assist going to
Colleen Maillie, converting on a penalty corner chance.
Â
Eight minutes later,
Maya Haigis unleashed a rocket that found the back of the cage for a 2-1 UR lead, with
Olivia Denny adding an assist on the play. Shortly after, UR's
Claire Dickerson nearly doubled the lead, but a defensive save by Molly Wood of SLU kept it a one goal game.
Â
Denny had four points (1 G, 2 A) on the day.
St. Lawrence then had back-to-back chances to tie the game in the 31st minute, but
Gabrielle Cantley made an itital save, with a follow-up shot being cleared off the line by UR's
Samantha Dow for a defensive save, preserving the Yellowjacket advantage.
Â
In the closing seconds of the first half, St. Lawrence's Wood again made a defensive save, this time stopping Haigis, but used her hand in the process, leading to a penalty stroke opportunity for the Yellowjackets, one which
Courtney Dunham connected on for a 3-1 Rochester lead heading into intermission.
Â
Just two minutes into the second half, Rochester earned another penalty stroke after the Saints illegally stopped a goal from entering the cage, allowing Maillie to score her first goal of the game and make the score 4-1.
Â
The Saints refused to go away, earning five penalty corners and posting six shots over a ten minute span after the fourth Yellowjacket goal, but
Kiran Sundaram stood tall against the barrage, making four saves in that span. She finished with six saves on the night, playing only the second half, while the starter Cantley made three stops in the opening 35 minutes.
Â
Denny then found the cage for her seventh goal of the season to boost UR's lead to four, taking a hard shot from the edge of the circle in the 58th minute.
Â
The two teams would trade late goals in the final six minutes, with Bailey Sherwin scoring for SLU while Rochester's
Claire Dickerson picked up her team leading 19th goal of the year with just under 90 seconds on the clock to complete the scoring.
