PALESTRA – Rochester won its fifth consecutive women's volleyball match, this one a 3-0 decision over Montclair State University, in the first set of matches in the 2017 New York Regional Volleyball Challenge on Friday evening.

The Yellowjackets won, 25-15, and 25-10, in the first two matches, then had to rally against a determined Red Hawks squad to pull out a 26-24 decision in the third match.

Rochester hit .337 for the three-match victory, .360 in the first game, .375 in the second game, and .297 in the third game. Montclair got going in the third set, hitting .222.

For the Yellowjackets (17-10),
Allie DeRubertis had 13 kills,
Alara Kocak had seven, and
Tamera Shaw had six. Shaw had four total blocks, DeRubertis had three, and
Kayla Sell had two.
Beth Ghyzel and
Renae Lapins were the assist leaders – Ghyzel with 18, Lapins with 13.

Lydia Barnard had eight digs, Ghyzel finished with seven, and
Bianca Dyer had five. Lapins had four aces,
Melissa Welsh had four as well, and
Sara Apanavicius had three.

For Montclair (13-17), Natalia Majkut had seven kills, Jillian Wilson had six, and Schyler White had five. Siara Herbert had two blocks and four aces. Wilson and Caitlin Lange each had a block.

Ashley Griffith had 16 assists. Megan O'Rourke had four, and Majkut had one. Lily Scanzillo had 10 digs, White finished with six, and Herbert had five.

On Saturday, Montclair plays Fredonia at 10:30 am on Zornow Court C. Rochester plays Clarkson at 12:30 pm in the Palestra. Montclair plays RIT at 12:30 pm on Zornow A while Rochester completes the two-day event with a 4:30 Palestra match against Buffalo State.
