Eight Straight Wins To Close Regular Season For UR

GENESEO, NY – The University of Rochester field hockey team ended its regular season on Saturday defeating host SUNY Geneseo 2-1 at College Stadium.

The win is #16 Rochester's eighth straight and pushes UR's record to 15-3 overall on the year.  Geneseo ends its regular season at 10-7.

Junior's Courtney Dunham and Nancy Bansbach scored the goals for the Yellowjackets, while Jennifer Lee and Maya Haigis notched assists in the game.

Dunham opened the scoring with a hard shot at 8:02 into the game.  Lee controlled the ball after a corner attempt, slid it over to Dunham for a blast into the net for her fifth tally of the season.

In the 24th minute, Bansbach made it 2-0 in favor of the Yellowjackets when she tipped in a corner shot from Haigis along the left side.

Five minutes before the opening half ended, Geneseo was able to get on the board when Tess Necaise scooped up a rebound and got the ball past UR keeper Gabrielle Cantley, trimming the lead to one.

After the break, UR dominated possession, allowing just one Knights penalty corner and one shot, to UR's five shots in the second half.  Overall in the very defensive minded game, UR had a 9-8 edge in shots and 6-4 advantage in penalty corners.

Cantley played all 70 minutes in the cage and made four saves for UR, while Nicole Gregg and Mia Ludwig split halves for Geneseo.  Gregg allowed both UR goal and did not make a save while Ludwig made three stops in the closing 35 minutes.

Rochester is back in action on Wednesday evening at 7 pm, playing host to William Smith College in the semifinals of the Liberty League Tournament.  UR is the top seed in the four-team playoff after finishing the conference season a perfect 7-0.
