PITTSFORD, NY – St. John Fisher's Bre Socker scored just 32 seconds into overtime to lift the host Cardinals to their 10th straight victory, winning 3-2 over the 17th-ranked University of Rochester on Wednesday evening at Growney Stadium.
Â
Socker ripped a hard shot to the right side of the cage from the center of the circle for her 11th tally of the season, completing a hat trick for the first-year player.
Â
The win moves St. John Fisher to 10-1 on the season while Rochester drops to 7-3 with the loss.
Â
Fisher would open the scoring in the 15th minute off their initial penalty corner of the contest when Socker blasted a hard shot from the left wing, with the assist going to Lauren Fazio.
Â
Rochester's
Claire Dickerson evened the score at 1-1 tipping in a penalty corner shot from teammate
Courtney Dunham at the 22 minute mark.
Â
In the 33rd minute, UR's
Olivia Denny nearly gave the Yellowjackets a lead with a tip-in goal at the near post off a PC shot from Dunham, but her attempt was blocked away by the Cardinal defense.
Â
Fisher's Emily Markarian responded with a chance in close one minute later, but
Gabrielle Cantley made the save in the UR cage, keeping the game tied at 1-1.
Â
In the second half, it was a quick start for the Cardinals as Socker netted her second of the night just 22 seconds in, slapping in a cross pass from Markarian.
Â
Rochester would rally again, with Dickerson scoring her second of the night on a very similar play to SJFC's second goal at 45:33. The Pittsford native tapped in a cross pass from
Nancy Bansbach who made a strong move in the circle to generate some space along the end line.
Â
With under four minutes to play, sophomore
Emma Schlechter had an excellent scoring opportunity in close, but her shot from five yards was saved by Cardinal goalkeeper Ashley Maynard, sending the game to overtime where Socker would score the game-winner.
Â
In goal, Cantley made two saves for the Yellowjackets while Maynard made eight stops for the Cardinals.
Â
Rochester continues its season on Saturday, continuing Liberty League play traveling to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute for a 5 pm matchup with the Engineers.
