Senior
Claire Dickerson tallied a goal in the second minute of overtime, lifting the 16th-ranked University of Rochester field hockey team to a 3-2 win over visiting SUNY New Paltz on Saturday afternoon at Edwin Fauver Stadium.
Dickerson recorded her eighth goal of the season and has recorded the game-winner in four of UR's five victories this season (5-1). 67 seconds into the extra period, Dickerson received a long pass up the right hand side, dribbled into the circle drawing New Paltz goalkeeper Megan Gangwere off the line, then lifted a shot into the goal for the win.
Gangwere was fabulous in the cage for the Hawks (2-4) making 26 saves. Overall, the Yelllowjackets pelted 43 total shots in the contest, compared to just six for New Paltz.
The Yellowjackets were able to open the scoring 73 seconds into the game. Senior captain
Nancy Bansbach scored by tipping in a long shot from teammate
Colleen Maillie who was well outside the circle when taking sending the ball towards the goal.
Rochester maintained the pressure, but couldn't break through during the rest of the half, with much of the credit going to Gangwere in the cage.
In the final minute of the first half, Dickerson nearly had a goal to give UR a 2-0 lead, but New Paltz's Samantha Ackerman was there for a defensive save.
Dickerson has four game-winners this season.
At the 42:35 mark of the contest, Ackerman once again denied Dickerson of a goal for the second time, this time clearing a ball that was inches from sliding over the goal line after the UR senior chipped a shot over the pad of Gangwere following a penalty corner shot from teammate
Maya Haigis.
The second defensive save gave the Hawks some momentum and they quickly turned that into the game-tying goal at the 44:00 minute mark. After a New Paltz player took a long hit that was on goal from outside the circle, the rebound was corralled by Kaitlyn Gunter and then slid into the cage to make the score 1-1.
Seven minutes later, the Hawks had taken the lead. Ackerman, who took a penalty corner, had snuck in behind the defense and tapped in a shot that got behind UR keeper
Kiran Sundaram from teammate Justine O'Reilly who had been camped in front of the goal.
After Rochester regrouped with a time out, the Yellowjackets were able to score the tying goal in the 62nd minute when Maillie dribbled into the circled and chipped a shot over Gangwere from six yards out on the left wing.
The 'Jackets nearly won the game in regulation, with Dickerson and
Jessica Brandon unleashing back-to-back shots in the 66th minute. Dickerson's shot ended up being saved, but it went to the stick of Brandon whose attempt hit the post before deflecting away to safety.
Dickerson ended up firing 11 shots on goal in the contest, two more than Bansbach who had nine attempts (six on goal).
Maya Haigis had six shots, mostly coming off of UR's 18 penalty corners while Brandon took five shot attempts. In the UR goal, Sundaram made four saves for the Yellowjackets and earned her fourth win of the season.
UR returns to action on Tuesday when the Yellowjackets host another SUNYAC school, this time with the Cortland Red Dragons coming to Fauver Stadium in a game starting at 6 pm.
