The University of Rochester field hockey team posted another shutout, its ninth of the season, winning 2-0 over St. Lawrence University on Sunday afternoon in a Liberty League matchup at Fauver Stadium.
Â
Rochester, ranked 6th in Division III in the latest NFHCA poll, moves to 14-0 overall and 5-0 in the Liberty League, remaining in a first place tie in the conference standings with Vassar College. UR heads to Vassar for its next game, taking on the Brewers next Friday at 4 pm in Poughkeepsie. The loss drops SLU to 5-7, 2-3 in the conference.
Â
The Yellowjackets applied the offensive pressure early and often on Sunday, leading 23-2 in shots and 13-3 in penalty corners.
Â
UR's first corner less than 90 seconds in yielded a hard blast from the edge of the circle from
Maya Haigis, an attempt which was saved by Saints keeper Sydney Giacin.
Â
In the 8th minute, the Yellowjackets scored when first-year
Amanda Strenk slapped in a rebound, sneaking her shot inside the right post.Â
Nancy Bansbach started the play outside the circle, slipping a pass in to teammate
Catherine Hauser who took the initial shot which was saved by Giacin.
Â
The ball deflected back out to Strenk who fired through traffic for her seventh goal of the season.
Â
At 19:45, Haigis sent a long pass into the circle to the stick of
Jennifer Lee who possessed it, took one dribble and flicked a backhand which sent just wide.
Â
In the 25th minute, some nifty passing on a penalty corner from
Colleen Maillie and Haigis ended in a
Courtney Dunham blast, but her shot sailed just wide.
Â
Rochester's lead doubled in the 29th minute. Strenk gained possession for UR deep in Yellowjacket terrirtory and swept a long pass up the center of the field, to teammate
Nikki Mercer. Mercer then fed Bansbach perfectly in stride with another long pass, leading the senior captain on a breakaway where she juked Giacin to the right and slipped a shot into the cage.
Â
Bansbach's goal is her team and league leading 14th of the season.
Â
Early in the second half, Bansbach looked for another goal off a penalty corner, lifting a shot from the left wing, but her attempt sailed just high of the goal.
Â
St. Lawrence's only offensive chances came in the 45th minute. The Saints had back-to-back shots off a penalty corner, the first by Lucy Stillman being a tip shot which was saved by UR's
Kate Kujawa. The rebound shot by Celia Fleckner was blocked by a foot, leading to another corner which was eventually cleared away.
