Jorie Freitag and
Margaret Lee scored eight minutes apart late in the second half as the University of Rochester rallied for a 2-1 women's soccer victory over Case Western Reserve University at Edwin Fauver Stadium on Friday night.
Â
The victory was the first University Athletic Association victory of the season for Rochester and its second straight win. UR is 8-6-1 overall, 1-4 in the UAA. Case Western Reserve slipped to 7-8 overall, 0-5 in the UAA.
Â
On Sunday, Rochester will host Carnegie Mellon University and CWRU will play at Emory University in Atlanta. On Friday, Emory edged CMU, 1-0, top-ranked Washington defeated Brandeis, 1-0, and NYU upended Chicago, 1-0.
Â
The game-tying goal in the 74
th minute was a suitable reward for Freitag. She was denied a goal in the third minute of play when Spartan goalie Lauren Metz made a sensational diving save for a corner kick.
Joanna Guay played a long ball in from the right touchline to Freitag, stationed a step inside the crease. Her header for the top right corner was punched away for a corner kick that proved harmless.

Jorie Freitag
Freitag's equalizer came from a headed free kick.
Meghan Martin played a long free kick from left wing into the center of the area and Freitag headed it inside the left side of the net.
Â
Minutes later, another good Rochester chance was spoiled when Spartan defender Mary Kate Ford cleared a shot away from the line in a goalmouth scramble.
Â
The Yellowjackets finally broke through for the equalizer with just under nine minutes to play. It started with
Kerri Eden playing the ball from the right flank into
Carolyn Richards just inside the box. She saw Lee running laterally at the top of the area and played the ball into Lee's path.
Â
Lee continued moving right to left until she found shooting space and she hit a 16-yarder to the top left corner to put the Yellowjackets ahead to stay.
Â
CWRU now threw more people into the attack and that provided a brief breakout for Rochester on a counter attack. Richards pulled away from a defender and ran from midfield to just outside the area when she tried to fire and catch Metz off-balance. The shot drifted high.
Â
With less than 90 seconds left, CWRU had a couple of chances on free kicks – first by Kimberly Chen (who did score the first goal) – and then by Kat Rebele whose long ball into the box created slight havoc before Rochester goalie
Emma Schechter leaped to grab a high ball being bandied about the box.
Â
The Spartans had two opportunities early. One was disrupted by an off-balance shot, the other wound up in the net. Seven minutes into the game, Christina Hickson came down left wing on a counter attack. She placed a pass into the center of the box. Schechter came off the line and the ball got past her laterally. As the goalie back-pedaled, Chen tried to fire at the low left corner, but Schechter was able to catch it.
Â
With 10 minutes gone, the ball went CWRU's way. Chen was pulled down just outside the area to the left of the penalty arc. She lined up the 19-yard free kick and placed it perfectly, over the wall and into the left corner of the goal for a 1-0 lead.
Â
The remainder of the first half and a fair portion of the second period was devoted to the Spartans clearing balls out of their own defensive end. With barely over a minute left in the first half, Eden hit a 10-yarder towards the low left corner which was cleared off the line for a corner kick by Rebele.
