UR Finishes Regular Season With 1-0 Win Over Geneseo

The University of Rochester field hockey team closed its regular season with a 1-0 victory over visiting SUNY Geneseo on Saturday evening at a cold and rainy Edwin Fauver Stadium.

Rochester moves to 17-1 on the season, the best regular season mark in school history, while the Knights end their regular season with a 9-6 mark.  Both teams will compete in their respective conference tournaments next week, with UR hosting Skidmore and Geneseo traveling to New Paltz on Wednesday.

The shutout is Rochester's 11th this season, tying for the most in school history with the 2015 season.  Individually, it was Kate Kujawa's 10th solo clean sheet, giving her the Rochester single-season record.

Junior Emma Schlechter scored the game-winner for the Yellowjackets on Saturday, notching a tip-in goal on UR's first shot attempt of the game.  That score game in the 15th minute as Schlechter re-directed a shot from the top of the circle by teammate Colleen Maillie.

Rochester's other good opportunity in the opening 35 minutes came at the 26 minute mark.  First-year Amanda Strenk gathered the ball deep in the corner of the circle on the left side and swept a pass inside to Nancy Bansbach who had two point-blank chances stopped.  One attempt was saved by Geneseo goalkeeper Natalie Chojnacki and the other was blocked away by the defense.

Bansbach looked for another goal at the 43 minute mark, lifting a ball towards the goal from the left wing on a penalty corner, but the Knights defense blocked her shot out of the air and away to safety.  UR's leading scorer ended up taking seven of the Yellowjackets 12 shots on the day.

Geneseo, although they did not register a shot, made a number of runs into Yellowjacket territory which generated multiple scoring chances.  Two came off the stick of Elisa Arcara in the 42nd and 43rd minutes.

Her first chance came when she pushed the ball into the circle from the left wing, only to see her cross cleaned up by UR's Maya Haigis.  After the Knights regained possession, Arcara possessed the ball along the left side and fed teammate Grace Dempsey at the near post, before Kujawa got to the ball and broke up the play.

With just under 20 minutes remaining, Haigis played a long ball up the left side to Catherine Hauser who embarked on a long run towards the left corner.  Hauser then swept a hard cross in front, but nobody was there for the tap in and the ball rolled away to safety.

UR ended up leading 12-0 in shots, four of which were on goal.  Rochester also took the only five penalty corners of the game.  Chojnacki made three saves in the cage for Geneseo.
