The University of Rochester field hockey team matched the best start to a season in school history, moving to 11-0 on the year, by defeating visiting St. John Fisher College 3-1 on Wednesday evening at Fauver Stadium.
Â
All of the scoring was done in the first half, with the Yellowjackets jumping out to a 3-0 lead behind goals from first year
Leona Fisher and two from junior
Emma Schlechter. Fisher's goal was the first of her collegiate career, while Schlechter recorded her second multi-goal game of the season.
Â
St. John Fisher (7-3), got a score late in the half from Lauren Fazio to crack the shutout and become the first visiting player to score against UR at home this season.
Â
By moving to 11-0, the Yellowjackets match the 2014 squad for best start in school history and will look to remain perfect when they take on Union College on Saturday afternoon at 1 pm in Schenectady.
Â
Schlechter scored two goals.
UR's Fisher got the scoring started in the 14th minute, tapping in a pass from the right side from classmate
Juney Lee. Both Fisher and Schlechter were five yards in front of the cage for the shot, but Fisher's stick was the first to strike the ball and earn the goal.
Â
Schlechter then got her chance and made it count, scoring twice in a span of 90 seconds to boost the UR lead to 3-1. Her first goal, coming at 25:56, was a tip in which went high in the net off a hard, left wing penalty corner blast from
Maya Haigis.
Â
After the restart, Rochester gained possession and Schlechter had an open look at the goal from eight yards. Her initial attempt was saved by SJFC keeper Ashley Maynard, but the rebound came right back to Schlechter who slipped her second shot into the cage.
Â
The Cardinals then found the cage in the 30th minute when Fazio, after inserting a penalty corner, tipped in hard penalty corner shot from her teammate Bre Socker for her eighth tally of the season.
Â
Both teams had a number of excellent chances, but both defensive units and goalkeepers stood tall, pitching shutouts over the final 35 minutes.
Â
In the 42nd minute, UR's
Kate Kujawa made two big stops on unmarked Cardinal attackers in the circle, five yards out. A cross came into the circle from the left wing to Kelly Bergamo who had a point blank chance kicked away. The rebound went right to Gianna Palma who also was denied by Kujawa who ended the game with three saves.
Â
Less than three minutes later, Schlechter was looking for her hat trick but saw her shot from 10 yards out straight on saved by Maynard's blocker. The follow up attempt from UR's
Jennifer Lee was then kicked away, keeping it a 3-1 game.
Â
At the sixty minute mark, Rochester had a trio of chances to increase its lead. A penalty corner led to a backhand shot from Haigis that was saved and then two shots from
Amanda Strenk which were stopped. The first Strenk shot was stopped by SJFC's Meagan McDonald for a defensive save, and the second was saved by Maynard.
Â
A flurry of four chances completed the scoring opportunities for the Yellowjackets in the 66th minute, again coming off a penalty corner. In the rush, Maynard made two remarkable diving saves and
Jennifer Lee hit the post.
Â
The Cardinals earned a penalty corner in the games final minute, but that amounted to nothing as the final score stood at 3-1 in favor of Rochester. The Yellowjackets held a 21-6 shot advantage and 10-5 edge in penalty corners.
