Rochester Will Face #5 Seed CWRU in UAA Volleyball Tournament

Rochester will play for seventh place in the University Athletic Association volleyball championships on Saturday morning. The Yellowjackets will face Case Western Reserve University on Zornow Court C at 10 a.m.
 
Rochester, seeded seventh in the field, lost to the University of Chicago, 3-1, on Friday (Chicago 25-18, 25-14, 21-25, 25-15). CWRU, seed, lost to Carnegie Mellon, 3-0 (25-18, 25-21, 25-18). In the consolation bracket, NYU outlasted Rochester in five sets (25-16, 25-20, 24-26, 24-26, 15-11) to book a spot in the fifth place match. Brandeis defeated CWRU 12-25, 25-13, 25-20, 25-20 to reach the fifth place match.
 
The third, fifth, and seventh place matches will all begin at 10 a.m. Saturday. Rochester plays CWRU on Zornow Court C for seventh place. NYU meets Brandeis on Zornow Court A for fifth place, and Washington University faces Carnegie Mellon University in the Palestra at 10 a.m. for third place honors.
 
The championship match will pair #1 seed Emory University against #2 seed the University of Chicago at 1 p.m. Before the title match, the seniors of all eight UAA teams will be honored in a special ceremony.
 
Emory posted 3-0 victories over Brandeis in the quarterfinals and Carnegie Mellon in the semifinals. Chicago beat Rochester, 3-1, in its opener, then topped Washington, 3-1, in the semis.

Hauer had 17 digs vs. NYU
Rochester vs. Chicago: Allie DeRubertis and Clara Martinez led UR with 10 kills apiece. Beth Ghyzel had seven kills. Alara Kocak had five. Kate Korslund and Tamera Shaw had four each. Ghyzel registered 31 assists and 13 digs. Sara Apanavicius led Rochester with 16 digs. Kocak had 13, and DeRubertis finished with 10. Shaw had four blocks (three assisted).
 
For Chicago, Anne Marie Stifter had a match-high 14 kills and added 15 digs. Madison Pearson and Sarah Muisenga had nine kills each. The Maroons had four players with double figure dig totals. Besides Stifter, Emma Griffith had 12 digs (and 44 assists). Temilade Adekoya and Sarah Muisenga had 11 kills. Audra Berg had four blocks (three assisted).
 
Rochester vs. NYU: UR fought back for a pair of 26-24 victories in sets three and four to force the fifth set (won by the Violets, 15-11). NYU won set one, 25-16, and set two, 25-20. Rochester's hitting game came around in the third and fourth sets - .263 in set three, .242 in set four. NYU played well at the net with 20 block assists plus a number of 'zero' blocks which frustrated the Yellowjacket hitting game.
 
For UR, Kocak led with 17 kills and added 12 digs. DeRubertis had 15 kills and seven digs. Korslund finished with nine kills and Martinez had eight. Ghyzel had 50 assists and 12 digs. Megan Hauer had 17 digs. Kocak had 12, Korslund 11. Ghyzel and Hauer had three aces apiece.
 
NYU's leaders at the net were Abby Ausmus with seven block assists, Caroline Rapp with five, and Gretchen Kincade with three. Rapp was one of three Violets with 10 or more kills. She had 13. Ausmus had 12 kills as did Nazzerine Waldon. Jacqueline Kupeli had 22 digs. Katie Goyette (12), Waldron (16), and Lauren Robinson had double figures in digs. Stella Alverson had 25 assists and Katie Goyette had 23.
 
Rochester heads into the CWRU match with a 23-11 record.  NYU is 18-15.
