Visiting RPI Defeats Rochester 8-1

Rochester's 1st doubles team picked up a big win over a nationally ranked pair, but the Yellowjacket men's tennis team fell by an 8-1 score to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute on Saturday afternoon at the Goergen Athletic Center.

The loss moves UR to 2-4 on the season, while the visiting Engineers (1-0) posted a win in their opening dual match of the season.

After RPI got on the board with wins at 2nd and 3rd doubles, the Yellowjackets pair of Masaru Fujimaki and Peter Huang defeated RPI's Sebastian Castillo-Sanchez and Andrew Imrie 8-4.  Entering the match, Castillo-Sanchez and Imrie were ranked #20 nationally and #7 in the northeast region in the latest ITA individual rankings.

The RPI doubles points came from Zack Ebenfeld and McKinley Grimes at #2 over Tanmay Thakkar and Sahaj Somani by an 8-6 score and from Tristan Wise and Brian Niguidula by an 8-2 score over Damani Eubanks and Matt Resnikoff at #3.

In singles, Fujimaki was the lone Yellowjacket to take his opponent, Castillo-Sanchez to three sets.  After winning the first set 6-4, Fujimaki dropped two straight, 7-5 and 10-4 to the RPI sophomore.

Imrie posted a 6-4, 6-2 win at #2 over UR's Jun Yuminaga, while Clay Thompson topped Thakkar 6-2, 7-6 at the #3 spot.

RPI's Ebenfeld won 7-5, 6-2 at four over Yifan Shen.  Grimes and Niguidula then posted nearly exactly the same linescore at #5 and #6 respectively.  Grimes topped Somani 6-1, 6-3, while Leo Koblence was beaten 6-1, 6-2 at #6.

Rochester is back in action next weekend with two road matches in Ohio.  UR plays at Oberlin on Friday and against Case Western Reserve on Saturday.
