Yellowjackets Sweep Nazareth in Home Softball Opener

The University of Rochester used some timely hitting to post a sweep of a doubleheader vs. Nazareth College in the home opener for the Yellowjackets on Tuesday afternoon.

Hannah Leahy picked up her third win of the season in the opener, a 6-2 Rochester win. UR won the nitecap, 8-0, shortened to five innings on the mercy rule. Elizabeth Bourne earned the win and the UR cause was helped by a six-run second inning.

The sweep gives the Yellowjackets a 5-10 overall record. Nazareth, which had not played since the end of March, is 6-8.

Game One:
Leahy scattered 10 hits in seven innings, allowed two earned runs, walked two, and struck out four. She stranded 11 Golden Flyers baserunners, five in scoring position.

Alexis Pope drove in two runs. Marissa Russo was 2-4 with a run scored and an RBI, and Jocelynn Blackshear hit her first HR of the spring.

For Nazareth, Katherine Ruoff and Madison Joseph had two hits apiece. Joseph had one RBI as did losing pitcher Gabriella Corasaniti. Lydia Petricca fouled out down the first base line in the bottom of the first and Russo tagged up to score from third.

The Golden Flyers scored single runs in the second (Corasaniti lined a single to the wall in right center for the tying RBI) and the third (Joseph doubled to right center scoring Ruoff).

UR scored two in the third to go ahead for good. A walk and Russo's single put two aboard. Pope doubled to left, scoring Harleigh Kaczegowicz. Petrrica flied to center and Kirsten Simmons threw out Russo at the plate, trying to tag and score. Pope went to third on the DP and when the Flyers threw the ball away trying to trap her off third, she was able to race home with the go-ahead run.

Two infield singles and a bunt hit loaded the bases in the fourth. Kaczegowicz forced Leahy at home. Russo's infield grounder was thrown home too late as Cortes scored the fourth UR run. Sammi Re came home one batter later on Pope's sac fly. Blackshear completed the scoring in the fifth, belting a home run to left.

Leahy found a bit of a rhythm in the third. She retired the last two hitters after Naz slid in front, 2-1. She allowed only two baserunners over the next two innings. In the sixth, Nazareth threatened, but Leahy got out of it after an interference call, a comebacker to the mound, and a strikeout of Marissa Drees. Nazareth put two aboard in the seventh, but Leahy got a flyball and two infield groundouts to end it.

Game Two:
UR broke it open with a six-run second inning to take a 7-0 lead. Jessica Conforti walked and Anne Marie Cortes bunted for a hit. They were bunted over by Sammi Re and Kaczegowicz was hit by a pitch for the second straight inning. That loaded the bases.

Marissa Russo walked to force in Conforti. Pope's sac fly to right scored Cortes for a 3-0 lead. Kaczegowicz stole home before a pitch was thrown. Gianna Melillo singled and took second on an error. That made it 5-0. Kylie Smith replaced Nazareth starter Baileasue Rounds. She was greeted by a two-run home run from Petricca for a 7-0 lead.

Conforti scored the eighth run in the third. She led off with a double and moved to third on an infield bouncer. Kaczegowicz's long fly to right center was dropped for a three-base error.

Bourne picked up her third career shutout and her sixth complete game. She stranded four runners, three at second base. Over the first three innings, she faced three over the minimum.

Baileasue Rounds took the loss for Nazareth. In 1.2 innings, she allowed three hits, six runs (all earned), walked three, and hit two. Kylie Smith relieved for the last 2.1 innings. She yielded three hits, two runs (one earned), and struck out six of the 11 batters she faced.
