Rochester's Win Streak Is Seven After Sweep of RIT

HENRIETTA, N.Y. – Rochester ran its softball winning streak to seven games – and eight of the last nine – by sweeping a doubleheader at RIT on Friday afternoon. The Yellowjackets won the first game, 3-1, then took game two, 8-4 in 10 innings on the tiebreaker system.

The two wins give Rochester an overall record of 15-14 and a Liberty League record of 8-4. Rochester closes the regular season portion of its schedule with a Liberty League doubleheader on Saturday. Game one has been moved up to a 12 p.m. start with rain possibly threatening in the latter stages of the afternoon.

RIT is 7-19 overall, 3-9 in the Liberty League. Last year, the Tigers split a twinbill against the Yellowjackets at Southside Field. RIT's win in game one that year clinched a Liberty playoff bid for the team. The Tigers completed their league season on Saturday  at Ithaca.

UR came through in the clutch in both games, a trait that has been displayed throughout the win streak. In game one, Elizabeth Bourne spun a three-hitter to get her sixth win of the season. In game two, Hannah Leahy worked out of an intentional bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the ninth. Her teammates rewarded her with a five-run outburst in the top of the 10th.

Game One:
Bourne allowed three hits, walked four, and struck out three to get the complete game victory. In the second, Madisen Baldwin was hit by a pitch and Sarah Thayer went in to run. Rochester catcher Harleigh Kaczegowicz picked off Thayer, throwing behind her to Jessica Conforti who covered while the infield charged in a bunt situation.

That was key because Bourne walked the next two hitters. She ended the inning with an infield pop and a comebacker. That started a run of eight straight outs. The Tigers didn't get a baserunner again until the fifth and by then, the Yellowjackets led, 3-0.

UR scratched out single runs in the second, third, and fifth. In the third, Jocelynn Blackshear was on first with two down. A wild pitch moved her to second and she scored on Bourne's single to right. In the third, Sammy Re singled to center.  She advanced on a walk to Marissa Russo. Two wild pitches scored Re and moved Russo to third, but Torie Adler worked out of it.

Rochester threatened in the fourth (second and third) but Adler worked through it. Another wild pitch helped Rochester get its third run. Kaczegowicz walked and Russo bunted her over. After a strikeout, Gianna Melillo singled through the right side for a 3-0 lead.

Melillo had 5 RBIs on the day.

In the home fifth, Nicole O'Donnell singled to right. She was thrown out at second on a sac attempt (Alexis Pope to Re). A walk put two aboard. The Tigers wound up with runners at the corners after a fielder's choice (Conforti to Re at second) forced Sammy Carroll. Another comebacker ended the inning.

RIT's run came off a home run by Erin Guinan with one down in the sixth.

Game Two:
Rochester rallied for five runs in the top of the 10th to push in front, 8-3, then allowed just  one run in the RIT half to post the victory.

For the first five innings, it was an excellent pitching duel between Leahy and RIT's Lauren Mahar. She held UR to a pair of hits and no walks with five Ks in the first five innings. Leahy kept pace. She allowed four baserunners in the third, two were thrown out at third, and just one runner in the fifth.

As the game went on, both teams found an ability to score runs. UR scored two in the sixth – one unearned. RIT scored three times in the sixth, one of the runs aided by errors. UR pushed across the tiebreaker in the seventh, then erupted for five in the 10th.

Kaczegowicz was hit by a pitch. She stole second. Russo reached on an infield single and when the ball was thrown away, Kaczegowicz ran to third. She scored on a wild pitch. Russo was eventually doubled home by  Melillo.

In the RIT sixth, the hosts loaded the bases on a hit, a hit batsman, and a fielder's choice. Baldwin lined to center where Russo made a diving catch. Danielle Hotz tagged and scored. Raquel Estrada singled home a run and the tiebreaker scored after an infield error.

Rochester tied it in the seventh. Blackshear doubled, was bunted to third, and scored on Michaela Farmer's single to left. Leahy got out of a couple of situations in the seventh and eighth to keep it going. Her most important escape came in the Tiger 9th.

RIT had runners on first and second with one down. Leahy fanned Alexandria Lunderman, then walked Guinan intentionally to load the bases. She got Baldwin on a swing-and-miss third strike to end the inning.

Farmer was placed at second to start the 10th in the tiebreaker scenario. Re walked. Kaczegowicz bunted both women over. With the count at 2-2, Russo fouled a ball off that struck her. She had to leave the game. Rachael Pletz finished the at-bat, getting hit by a pitch on a 3-2 count that loaded the bases. Lydia Petricca hit the first pitch into left for a two run single. With the count 1-2, Melillo lofted a three-run home run to left that boosted it to 8-3. RIT scored one in its half on O'Donnell's sac fly.
