UR Drops Non-Conference Finale to Brockport

BROCKPORT, NY – The University of Rochester baseball team dropped their final regular season, non-conference game on Tuesday afternoon to the Brockport Golden Eagles. The Yellowjackets fall to 14-13 overall with the 10-7 loss on the road.

The Golden Eagles were first on the board thanks to a Justin Valentino sacrifice fly that scored Lou Miceli. Rochester responded in the top of the third when Kyle Trombley singled through the middle to get on base. He then used his speed to come around and score on a past ball. The Yellowjackets followed with two more runs in the third with Steve Pickering scoring on an RBI single from Jack Herman. Not long after, Aiden Finch came around to score on an RBI double by Tyler Schmidt, down the left field line.

Rochester continued their productive offensive play in the top of the fourth inning with three more runs. Ryland McNabb started the inning with a single then advanced to second on a Brockport error. He then came around to score after a wild pitch and a passed ball. Aaron Craig was the second Yellowjacket to cross home plate in the inning after a walk then a finch sacrifice foul out. Trombley scored his second run of the game to give UR a 6-1 lead after the top half of the fourth.

It was all Brockport from there on out, scoring nine unanswered runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings. Rochester was able to get one more across in the top of the eighth on a Trombley sacrifice fly that scored Drew Bankovich but it was too little too late.

Schmidt and David Reith led Rochester with two hits and one RBI each. Trombley was 1-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Steve Pickering was 1-4 with a double and one run scored and McNabb singled and scored for the Yellowjackets. Jon Turk got the start on the mound for UR, going 4.0 innings, giving up five hits and two earned runs while striking out six. Tyler McConway and Owen Gabbey both threw scoreless innings for Rochester.

Anthony Eaton led Brockport with three hits on the day. Eaton drove in one run and scored another. Tom Kretzler had two hits an RBI and two runs scored while Nik Malachowski also had two hits, driving in one run and scoring another. The Golden Eagles used eight different pitchers to pull out the victory with Casey Piazza going 2.0 innings with two strikeouts to pick up the win.

Rochester will play a home and home set of double-headers this Saturday and Sunday against RIT with hope of securing a top seed in the Liberty League playoffs.
