CORTLAND, NY – The University of Rochester volleyball team got the 2018 season off to a strong start, earning two 3-0 victories on day one of the SUNY Cortland Red Dragon Invitational.

Rochester (2-0), won in the afternoon over Fredonia 25-11, 25-22, 25-14 before posting an evening sweep over Lebanon Valley, winning by scores of 30-28, 25-15, 25-14.

Alara Kocak and
Clara Martinez were the kills leaders in the opener against Fredonia, smacking 10 and eight respectively. Kocak added six digs while Martinez added three blocks.

The Yellowjackets dominated from the service line, recording 13 aces.Â
Beth Ghyzel had four,
Sara Apanavicius three with
Allie DeRubertis and
Lydia Barnard adding two each. Ghyzel also handed out 25 assists and had nine digs, while Apanavicius led the Yellowjackets with 18 digs.

Courtney Vidovich added 10 digs, while DeRubertis had six to go along with four kills.

In the night match, UR hit exceptionally well, to the tune of .378 for the entire match, including .714 in the third set. Overall, Rochester had 41 total kills, compared to just 10 errors in 82 attempts.

Martinez and
Tamera Shaw were the leaders with 10 kills each, while DeRubertis added eight.Â
Kate Korslund chipped in four.

Ghyzel added 31 assists and seven digs against LVC, while Apanavicius and Vidovich were the dig leaders with 16 and nine respectively. Shaw kept her strong match going defensively, being in on four of UR's five blocks.

The Yellowjackets are right back in action on Saturday afternoon, playing two more matches to finish up the Cortland Tournament. UR plays against Stockton University at 10 am before taking on Wells College at 3 pm.
