Late Goals Lift #4 Hardin-Simmons Past UR

GENEVA, NY – 4th-ranked Hardin-Simmons University used two late second half goals to earn a 2-0 victory over the University of Rochester women's soccer team on Saturday afternoon at the Stand On Their Shoulders Invitational at William Smith College.

HSU (1-1-0), scored at the 83 minute mark, and then added an insurance tally four minutes later to reach the final margin.

The Cowgirl defense also played strong, holding the Yellowjacket offense in check, only surrendering three Yellowjacket shots all game, only one of which was on goal.  Hardin-Simmons took 11 shots, eight on target.  The Cowgirls also held an 8-2 edge in corner kicks.

UR's opening chance came at the 10 minute mark of the first half, but Kerri Eden's shot sailed wide left of the net.

At 36:07, first-year Carolyn Richards lifted a ball high of the net.

Meanwhile, UR's defense held HSU off the board in the opening 45 minutes, giving up five shots, three which were saved by UR's first-year keeper Emma Schechter.  Schechter ended the contest with six total stops.

The Yellowjackets then got their only shot on goal in the 71st minute off the foot of Richards, but her attempt was foiled by HSU keeper Caitlin Christiansen.

Hardin-Simmons was able to break through at 82:59.  Elly Green slipped a pass up the left side to teammate Finda Kollie who beat a defender and left footed a shot from inside the penalty area into the top half of the net, breaking the scoreless draw.

Less than four minutes later, the Cowgirls struck again, this time off a corner.  Josey Meyer took the set piece and sent a ball into the back of the box where it was headed down by Kollie towards Kenne Kessler who turned and fired a quick shot into the right side of the net.

Rochester is back in action on Wednesday on the road at Keuka College in a match slated for a 7 pm start.
