100-Yard INT Return Aids Emory & Henry in Win Over UR

Emory & Henry University scored in all three facets of the game – offense, defense, and special teams – enroute to a 52-17 victory over the University of Rochester at Edwin Fauver Stadium.

The Wasps scored on all five first-half possessions and returned an interception 100 yards for another score. E&H led, 38-0, at halftime. In the second half, the Wasps ran for one TD and caught a blocked punt in the end zone for a final tally.

This win came after Emory & Henry went three weeks without a game. The Wasps defeated Ferrum College, 45-29, on September 1. They were idle on September 8. Last Saturday's game vs. Methodist College was cancelled when Methodist officials closed the school awaiting Hurricane Florence. E&H is 2-0 and goes to Hampden-Sydney next Saturday.

Rochester's record is 1-3 overall. The Yellowjackets are idle next week. They open the Liberty Leaguer season by hosting St. Lawrence University on October 6.

E&H quarterback Hunter Taylor ran for two first-half TDs and threw for a third. He connected on 12 of 18 passes for 133 yards and the TD – an 11-yarder to Bradley Puccio on the first drive of the game. He ran three yards for a TD on the second Wasps' possession in the first period, then scored from four yards out with 3:24 left in the half. That put the guests up, 31-0. The lead grew to 38-0 on Tyree Ward's 10-yard scoring run with 14 seconds left in the period. Matt Seals kicked seven PATs for the guests and booted a 34-yard field goal.

The key play in the game was a 100-yard interception return by Tyler Redmond at the start of the second quarter. Down 14-0, Rochester drove from its own 28 down to the Emory & Henry 6. Matt Gallagher completed a 28-yard pass to Duncan Stewart on fourth-and-10 at the E&H 34. After a run for zero yards, Gallagher threw for Daniel DiLoreto in the middle of the end zone. Jake Jessee tipped it away. Redmond scooped it up just before it hit the ground and he took off, surrounded by blockers. He raced down the left sideline to complete the 100-yard play – which is a Fauver Stadium record.

In the second half, E&H scored on just one of its five offensive possessions. The Wasps drove 38 yards in five plays with Markell Moss scoring on a six-yard TD.

The last score came when Rochester was backed up to its own 13 on a punt. Josh Brown's punt from the middle of the end zone was blocked by Hayden Milley and caught in the air by Donovan Pinnix for a touchdown.

E&H's longest scoring drive was 67 yards – on the opening possession. The Saints rushed for 180 yards and passed for 161 more. Ward led the Wasps with 53 yards on nine carries and the TD. Taylor gained 51 yards on five tries. Sam Wagner rushed eight times for 49 yards. Jake Sturgill replaced Taylor at QB at halftime. He was 2-6 for 28 yards. Neither man was sacked. The Wasps totaled 341 yards in offense.

UR ran for 79 yards – Damon Yargeau led the way with 44 yards rushing. Sean Mannio had 25, and Joshua Liao had 23. Gallagher completed 12 of 26 passes for 144 yards, one interception, and one TD. Brown came on in the fourth quarter. He was 6-7 for 54 yards. UR totals 277 yards in offense – 79 rushing, 198 passing.

Stewart caught five passes for 59 yards. Noah Shinaman had four catches for 70 yards and a TD. Tyler Tanen had four catches for 30 yards.

Rochester scored all of its points on its first three possessions of the second half. Gallagher directed a six-play, 56-yard drive to start the third period. He ran 12 yards for a TD to get UR's score. On the next possession, he drove UR 75 yards in six plays. He completed foru passes in the TD drive, the last a 24-yarder to Shinaman down the right sideline. That made it 38-14.

E&H looked like a drive stalled, but a false start penalty aided the Wasps. Aldonis Turay returned a kick return 51 yards to the UR 38 after the Shinaman touchdown. Three runs left the Wasps facing 4th-and-2 at the UR 30.  Sturgill's pass over the middle for Chris Gannon was dropped, but E&H was assessed a five-yard dead ball personal foul, moving the ball back to the 35. On 4th-and-7, Sturgill and Gannon hooked up on a 29-yard passing play that put the ball on the six. Moss rushed for a TD on the next snap.

Dawson Klinger kicked his fourth field goal of the year, this one a 30-yarder with 28 seconds left in the third period. It completed Rochester's scoring.
