READING, PA – The University of Rochester men's soccer team picked up another victory, moving to 7-0-0 on the season following a 1-0 win over Alvernia University on Saturday afternoon.
Rochester's goal came on a penalty kick from senior
Bryce Ikeda in the 23rd minute. Classmate
Patrick Conway made four saves in goal for his seventh win and fourth shutout of the season.
UR, ranked #6 in the latest Division III coaches poll, got its first solid chance in the game at 8:17 from sophomore
Anurag Dwivedi who had scored in two of the last three Yellowjacket games. A ball got deflected out to the sophomore at the edge of the box and he ripped a hard shot, missing the goal wide right.
At 10:16, the Golden Wolves (2-5-2) had their best chance of the day when a high ball was settled in the box before being sent through along the left side in close to Cody Hart who saw Conway make a diving save to his left.
Zach Lawlor was unmarked at the back post off a UR corner kick in the 20th minute, but his attempt sailed high.
Less than three minutes later UR got on the board. The penalty kick was awarded when
Ulrik Koren got tripped up in the box along the left endline, leading to Ikeda's team best fourth goal of the year.
Shortly after the goal, Christian Baltier nearly made it 2-0, but his tough angle shot from the right wing was chipped just over the crossbar.
In the second half, Dwivedi again provided the first scoring chance, coming off an Ikeda throw in from the right side. Dwivedi leaped and got a head on the ball first, directing it toward the near post, but Alvernia keeper Joe Ginder was there for one of his seven saves on the day.
A Golden Wolves foul in the 64th minute gave the Yellowjackets a free kick from 20 yards out, but
Lasha Alkhazishvili sent his curving attempt from the left wing high of the net.
First-year
Rio Kehe then provided the final two scoring opportunities for the 'Jackets. The first came at 74:51 when he outleaped a defender and headed a shot to the right post which was saved.
Kehe's second chance came with three minutes to go off an Ikeda free kick, but the first-year's sliding attempt at the left post was saved away for a corner kick.
The statsheet was in favor of the Yellowjackets, with UR leading 17-8 in shots and 6-0 in corners. Rochester's next game is the UAA conference opener set for next Saturday at #2 University of Chicago.
