Rochester Rebounds From First Loss With Two Wins

SELINSGROVE, PA – The University of Rochester volleyball team got back to its winning ways on Saturday at the Susquehanna River Hawk Classic, posting two victories after suffering its first loss Friday evening.
 
Rochester (14-1), defeated Frostburg State 3-0 (25-15, 25-21, 25-12) before rallying to beat Messiah College 3-2 (15-25, 25-22, 21-25, 26-24, 15-12).
 
In the opener against Frostburg State, UR was led by senior Alara Kocak who had 11 kills and eight digs.  Setter Beth Ghyzel added five on seven attempts and handed out 24 assists as well.
 
Clara Martinez had six kills while Kate Korslund and Allie DeRubertis each added four.  Sara Apanavicius and Courtney Vidovich each had double digit kills with 12 and 10 respectively, with each adding three service aces.  Overall in the match, UR had 11 aces.
 
Rochester added seven blocks as well, with Martinez stuffing three and Korslund and Kocak adding two apiece.
 
The Bobcats struggled hitting in the match, which led to their demise.  Frostburg hit -.056, hitting 22 errors with just 17 kills.  They were led by Haley Altemus who had five kills and six digs.
 
Rochester's DeRubertis led all players in the second match, smacking 19 kills while hitting .313 for the match.  She added eight digs and three blocks in the victory.
 
Kocak had her second double-digit kill performance of the day, ending with 13 kills and three aces, while Apanavicius added 16 digs and four aces.
 
Ghyzel finished with 44 assists, 7 digs and 2 aces, while Elizabeth Thomas and Tamera Shaw each had four kills.

Both Kocak and DeRubertis were named to the All-Tournament Team following competition.
 
Rochester's next match is a home contest on Tuesday evening at 6 pm against RIT.
