Some strong defending and a timely second half goal were enough to push visiting Nazareth College to a 1-0 women's soccer victory over the University of Rochester at Edwin Fauver Stadium on Tuesday evening.
Â
Nazareth improved its record to 4-2-3 overall and has a five-match unbeaten streak (three ties plus wins at each end of the streak). Rochester had a five-game unbeaten streak halted. The Yellowjackets are 5-2-1 overall. In this week's Division III poll by the United Soccer Coaches, Rochester is ranked 18
th nationally and second in the East. Nazareth is among others receiving votes in the East poll.
Â
Elizabeth Guidi was the goalscorer for the Golden Flyers. It was her first goal of the year. The assist went to Mia Strollo at 57:11. Nazareth earned a corner kick. Guidi played it to Strollo short along the left sideline. Strollo returned the pass and Guidi struck a low ball into the penalty area. When no one reached it clear it, the ball landed in the back of the net with Rochester goalkeeper Emma Schecter partially screened.
Â
The goal put a spark into the Rochester attack. Within two minutes,
Margaret Lee hit a 25-yarder from the right slot that Nazareth goalkeeper Hannah Miller dove to save at the far post. A minute later,
Carolyn Richards evaded a defender on the right endline and crossed the ball inside the crease but
Lexi Bostley's touch sent it over the crossbar.
Â
Miller made a terrific save in the first minute of the second half when the game was scoreless. Richards got away from her defender and cut into the area – alone – from right wing. Miller came off the line and as Richards shot, Miller got down to save the ball and cover up. Miller finished with seven saves. Schechter had two for UR.
Â
Nazareth did well, forming a defensive shield at the edge of its defensive third. The Golden Flyers were quick to defend, take away the ball, and head the other way. In the last 14 minutes of the first half, Lindsey Farrance cleaned up a scrum at the top of the Nazareth penalty area with Richards and
Annie McEachron cutting in.
Â
With 20 minutes left in the second half, Rochester fashioned a nice three-person passing combination with
Kerri Eden sending the ball from the middle to
Kailee Sowers on the right. She took it deep down the sideline and played a low ball into the middle which
Jamison Seabury tapped just wide of the right post.
Â
Nazareth plays two more road matches – visiting Elmira on Saturday and RIT on October 2. Rochester opens the University Athletic Association season on Saturday, paired against the University of Chicago which is ranked third in the current USC Division III poll.
