'Jackets Sweep Through UR Invitational

The University of Rochester volleyball team made it a weekend sweep, posting two more 3-0 match wins on Saturday to capture the tournament title at the UR Volleyball Invitational.
 
UR won over SUNY Poly 25-11, 25-19, 25-12 and then defeated St. John Fisher 25-11, 25-20, 25-15 to push its record to 8-0 on the young season.
 
Rochester won the tournament title for the second week in a row over Nazareth, who also finished the UR Invite undefeated, but played fewer matches.  St. John Fisher finished the two day event 2-1, while Wells and Medaille each went 1-2.  Utica and SUNY Poly rounded out the field and each went 0-3.
 
The Yellowjackets had four members make the All-Tournament Team, with Clara Martinez, Beth Ghyzel, Allie DeRubertis and Sara Apanavicius earning the accolades.  Joining the UR players on the All-Tournament team were Nazareth's Kelsey Milligan and Jessica Barry, Wells' Jackie Allen and Rachel Anderson, St. John Fisher's Alea Stigerwald, Medaille's Melissa Postek, Karlie King representing SUNY Poly and Nicole Herringshaw from Utica.

Ghyzel was named to the All-Tournament Team.

Against SUNY Poly, Rochester hit lights out in the first and third sets, attacking at .481 and .500 respectively, leading to the comfortable wins.  Martinez led all players with 13 kills, 3 aces and 3 blocks, while DeRubertis smashed 12 kills.
 
Apanavicius had 15 digs and two aces while Ghyzel had 23 assists, 5 digs and 2 aces.  Courtney Vidovich and Tamera Shaw each chipped in four kills.  King led SUNY Poly with seven kills in the match.
 
The second match of the day was more of the same, with UR hitting a ridiculous .704 in the opening set, hitting 20 kills to one error in 27 attempts.  Overall for the match, Rochester hit .376 as a team and ended up leading the tournament with a .320 percentage over the four matches.
 
DeRubertis posted a career-high 17 kills and added six digs in the win.  The sophomore led the tournament in total kills with 41 across the four matches.  Apanavicius added a career-best 20 digs.
 
Martinez finished with 12 kills and three blocks and led the tournament with 12 in four matches.  Shaw added eight kills while first-year Hope Havenhill swatted six.  Ghyzel handed out 40 assists and added seven digs while Lauren Lopez had two aces and seven digs.
 
The Yellowjackets look to keep the strong start to the season going on Wednesday when UR hosts SUNY Geneseo in a dual match at 6 pm in the Palestra.
