UR Wins Key Matchup Over St. John Fisher

PITTSFORD, NY – The University of Rochester field hockey team battled host St. John Fisher College on Tuesday evening and emerged with a 4-1 victory in a key regional matchup at Growney Stadium.

Rochester (6-4) got two goals from senior co-captain Colleen Maillie, with Juney Lee and Nikki Mercer also adding individual scores on the night.  Senior goalkeeper Kate Kujawa made three saves in the victory, the 26th of her career.

St. John Fisher falls to 6-2 on the season, and is among others receiving votes, along with UR, in the latest NFHCA Division III Coaches Poll which was released on Tuesday afternoon.

The host Cardinals had the games first offensive burst, taking three penalty corners in the first four minutes of the game, but only could get off one shot attempt on those tries.  SJFC would end the game with a big 15-3 advantage in corners, but strong UR defense was able to minimize the scoring chances.

UR's Lee got the scoring started with Rochester's first shot of the game at the 12:27 mark of the first quarter.  In close to the cage, Lee chipped the ball into the pads of Cardinal goalkeeper Kelly Bergamo, and saw the ball trickle through for the sophomore's second goal of the year.

Colleen Maillie
Maillie scored twice.

Eighty-three seconds into the second, Maillie recorded her first goal of the night, weaving around the Fisher defense in the circle and slipping her shot just inside the right post.

St. John Fisher looked to respond shortly after, with Bre Socker blasting a slap shot off a penalty corner into the cage, cutting the lead to 2-1.  Jess Snyder picked up the assist on the insert pass.

In the third, Rochester was held without a shot attempt as St. John Fisher looked to equalize, but none of the three Cardinal attempts in the period were on goal, two being blocked by the defense and one sailing wide.

UR took control in the fourth.  After back-to-back shots were saved off a penalty corner in the 49th minute, Maillie stuck with the play, forcing in a rebound for her second goal of the night.

The Cardinals had a flurry of four shots after a penalty corner in the 55th minute, but three Socker shots and one off the stick of Lindsay Scott were cleared away.

Mercer completed the games scoring with under three minutes to play, tapping in a loose ball pass from teammate Maya Haigis.

Rochester returns to action on Sunday playing at 2 pm on the road at Liberty League opponent St. Lawrence.
