Carnegie Mellon Squeezes Out 2-0 Win Over Rochester

PITTSBURGH, PA – In a battle of two long-time rivals, Carnegie Mellon University was able to post a 2-0 men's soccer victory on its own field on Friday evening. The win puts CMU at 5-6-1 overall, 1-2 in the UAA. Rochester is 7-5 overall, 0-3 UAA.

The Tartans scored one goal in each half. What turned out to be the gamewinner came in the 30th minute. Elliot Cohen managed to work the ball around UR goalkeeper Hugh Curran and shove a pass in front for Alex Dziadosz to tap in. They hooked up again five minutes into the second half. Cohen played the ball in and Dziadosz moved around a defender to tuck the ball in near post, just out of Curran's reach.

Rochester did create some solid chances, particularly in the second half. At the midpoint of the period, Mitch Volis came down the left touchline short of the endline. He lined a low cross into the center of the crease with blue shirts trying to reach it. But the ball made it all the way to the other side and CMU cleared it.

Most things get repeated, though, and a minute later, CMU attached down the right side with the same result: strong cross with white shirts outnumbering blue, and none of the home side could reach the ball.

Zach Lawlor struck a cross from left wing for the near post with 17 minutes left. CMU keeper Alex Singh was able to cover it.  Less than a minute later, Volis chipped a pass over the top to spring Tony Hipsher into the box. Nothing came of it with a collision in the box.

Volis tried again, from left wing, lifting the ball for the top right corner and Singh got to it to keep the shutout with less than 13 minus to play.

The Yellowjackets were awarded a free kick just past the penalty arc with 5:40 to go. Singh let the wall block the left side of goal and he set up at the right post. Cristian Baltier tapped the ball to Josh Cooley. As the wall charged, Cooley shot and it was blocked away by the defenders and cleared.

Curran made four saves, Singh had three.
