PRINCE ATHLETIC COMPLEX – Rochester remains tied for second place in the Liberty League field hockey standings after securing a 2-1 victory in overtime against Union College at Edwin Fauver Stadium.
Â
The win boosts the Yellowjackets to 12-5 overall, 5-1 in the league standings. Skidmore (6-0) tops the pack with Ithaca and Rochester at 5-1. Vassar is fourth with a 4-2 mark. UR has won four in a row. The Yellowjackets play at Ithaca on Sunday afternoon.
Â
Union is 1-6 in the league, 5-9 overall. The Dutchwomen lost to Skidmore, 2-1, last Sunday.
Â
Amanda Strenk scored the gamewinner at 63:57. The Yellowjackets earned back to back penalty corners. On the second one,
Juney Lee played the ball out to
Maya Haigis just to the left of center outside the arc. Haigis slid the ball to Strenk up top. With no shooting angle, Strenk returned the ball. As the Union defenders shifted ever so slightly, Haigis gave the ball back to Strenk. She took one step forward and lined the gamewinning goal into the low right corner through a tangle of legs and sticks. It was her 10
th goal of the season, her third gamewinner.
Â
UR took a 1-0 lead just before the first quarter ended. It started with another penalty corner. It was played by Lee out to Haigis left of center. She entered the circle and fired.
Nikki Mercer got a stick to it and the ball deflected to
Catherine Hauser who touched it into the low right corner. It was Hauser's 13
th goal of the season.
Â
Union's defense was organized and strong. The Dutchwomen did a good job poking the ball away and blocking paths to the circle. Goalkeeper Heather Poisson posted eight saves and her defense knocked down several more.
Â
Steady pressure from Rochester kept Union in its own half. In the fourth period, though, the Dutchwomen rushed upfield and produced the equalizer. With a bunch of white shirts in the circle, Charlotte Leyland took a hard shot for the center of the goal that UR goalie
Kate Kujawa blocked. The rebound popped back to the middle and Katie Talacci got to it first. She whistled the ball into the lower left hand corner of the goal at 50:37.
