Rochester Pours In 4 Second Half Goals to Beat NYU, 5-1

PRINCE ATHLETIC COMPLEX – The University of Rochester broke open a tie game by scoring three goals in a span of less than nine minutes in a 5-1 victory over NYU on Friday evening at Edwin Fauver Stadium.

Zach Lawlor scored two goals and assisted on a third. Josh Cooley had assists on three goals scored off corner kicks. Mitch Volis scored on a penalty kick. Owen Carroll and Colin Canning scored goals as well.

The NYU goal was scored by Sergio Monton on a penalty kick in the sixth minute – 18 seconds after Rochester took a 1-0 lead.

Rochester improved to 10-5 overall, 2-3 in the University Athletic Association. The Yellowjackets host Brandeis on Sunday on Senior Day. NYU is 7-6-1 overall, 3-2 in the UAA. The Violets won their first three UAA games, then lost to Chicago, 1-0, in double overtime 12 days ago. NYU plays at Emory on Sunday.

In goal, Hugh Curran made four saves to earn the win for the Yellowjackets. Luca Cancuso made four saves for NYU.

Rochester earned back to back corner kicks in the first five minutes. On the second one, Cooley lifted the ball from the left attacking corner to the back post where Lawlor headed it into the net.

Zach Lawlor
Lawlor scored two and set up one
NYU raced downfield with the kickoff. As Owen Smith tried to veer into the left side of the box, he was knocked down and a penalty kick was awarded. That was converted by Monton. The guests nearly broke the tie midway through the half. Louis Meeks had a long free kick from left wing that was over Curran's head. It struck the crossbar and was cleared. Smith was in the offensive mix two minutes later. The ball was served to him from right wing and he volleyed past the right post.

Curran came up big in the 37th minute. Oliver Kleban took a point blank shot from the edge of the crease but he saved it.

The Yellowjackets had first half chances, one of them denied on a terrific save by Mancuso. Not long after the volley wide by Smith, Volis sent a ball over from left wing. Lawlor tried to head it inside the right corner, but Mancuso punched it out. He made a sliding save on a shot from Tony Hypsher as the Rochester first-year tried to spin and shoot after settling a high ball.

With less than 80 seconds left in the first half. Hypsher crossed the ball from right wing looking for Caden Dowd. The ball got past Dowd. Before NYU could react, Lawlor ran in to poach a goal, but his shot went over the crossbar.

UR broke the tie in the 64th minute. Cooley played it from the corner to the far (right) post. Lawlor headed it into the middle and Carroll headed it just under the crossbar. Six minutes later, Cooley found Lawlor with another corner kick and this one, he directed into the top left corner. It took three minutes more to make the score 4-1. NYU was called for a foul for bringing down Hypsher inside the area. That produced a yellow card. A second yellow was issued for dissent before the PK. Volis converted.

In the final minutes, Tommy Nelson came down the left sideline in transition. He hit the ball into the middle to Canning who took one step to his left and fired into the low left corner.

Notes: Cooley became just the fifth Rochester player to record three assists in one game. The last one was Jeff Greblick in 2013.
