PRINCE ATHLETIC COMPLEX – NYU scored on a transition in the 57
th minute to snap a 0-0 tie enroute to a 1-0 women's soccer victory over the University of Rochester at Edwin Fauver Stadium on Friday evening.
Â
It was a matchup of two regionally-ranked teams in the East. NYU is 11-5 overall with the win, 2-3 in the UAA. The Violets are tied with Case Western Reserve for fifth place in the UAA standings. Rochester is 8-5-2 overall, 0-4-1 in the UAA.
Â
The Yellowjackets had a couple of early chances but the Violet defense held firm. As the first half passed the 30-minute mark, each team had an excellent chance to break onto the scoreboard.
Â
A pass upfield sent Rochester's
Madison Drenowatz racing down the left wing, a step past her defender. As she drew within 20 yards of goal, she angled to the right and tried to lay a pass into the path of
Carolyn Richards, running unmarked down the center. NYU's Jade Keane caught up and was able to break up the pass.
Â
Within two minutes, the Violets had their opportunity. Elizabeth Marks sent a long ball to Sam March who ran untouched until she got within sight of goal. As Rochester goalkeeper
Emma Schechter raced out of the net, March fired a low shot for the left post. The ball drifted just wide of the post.
Â
NYU goalkeeper Meghan Marhan turned back Rochester twice with good saves five minutes into the restart. One minute in, she saved a Drenowatz header off a corner kick from
Cesca Sheppard. Four minutes later, Richards broke through 1v1 against Marhan and shot for the low right corner. The NYU junior was able to turn it past the right post for a corner kick. Marhan finished with six saves, five in the second half. Schechter had two saves for UR.
Â
The gamewinning goal was scored by Hadley Bushala in a combination of good teamwork. Julia Raith drove the ball upfield to spring Isabelle Turner free. She got to the edge of the crease and slid the ball to her right where Bushala knocked it into the goal. Marks had a chance to make it 2-0 midway through the half, but her shot off the right endline was saved by Schechter.
Â
Rochester's last chance came in the final 30 seconds. Richards swept down the right side and crossed the ball into the middle. A Drenowatz header from inside the crease went just past the left post – wide.
Â
On Sunday, Rochester will host Senior Day before its 11 am match against Brandeis. NYU will play at Emory on Sunday. Next week, UR wraps up the regular season against Emory in Atlanta.
