GENESEO, N.Y. – Rochester rallied to tie the score twice before SUNY Geneseo scored the tiebreaking goal in the fourth period and held on for a 3-2 field hockey victory over the University of Rochester.
The Knights improved their record to 17-2 while Rochester finished the regular season at 12-8. UR will play at Ithaca College on Wednesday as the number three seed in the Liberty League playoffs. The winner of that match will play in the Liberty League championship match next Saturday with a much higher stake: the Liberty champion gets an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III playoffs.
Geneseo took a 1-0 lead at 3:34 when Jordan Penkitis hit a backhander from five yards out after a pass from Haley Clark. The Yellowjackets got even early in the second quarter.
Catherine Hauser scored on a rebound at 15:39. It was her 14th goal of the season.
The Knights edged back in front at 20:12 when Penkitis fed Julia Kim for a goal. Rochester evened it before the half ended.
Amanda Strenk lifted the ball into the top right corner of the goal at 24:55.
Neither side scored in the third period and there was only one shot. In the fourth quarter, Penkitis stole a pass and made a long run upfield before slipping a shot home from close-in distance at 51:50. It was her 12th goal of the season.
In goal,
Kate Kujawa made six saves for Rochester. Natalie Chojnacki made four saves for Geneseo. UR held a 14-9 edge in total shots but the Knights led, 9-7 in shots on goal. The Yellowjackets had seven penalty corners and Geneseo mustered four.
