Biola Ends UR's Nine-Match Men's Tennis Winning Streak

LA MIRADA, CA – Rochester's nine-match winning streak to open the 2018-19 men's tennis season came to a halt against Biola University, an NCAA Division II program. The final score was 4-2 at the LaMirada Tennis Center. It was Rochester's second match of the day. UR defeated Haverford College, 8-1, in  morning match (9 am Pacific Time start).

Biola (6-4) won two of the three doubles matches to claim the first team point. UR took two of the five completed singles events. The first singles position between Masaru Fujimaki and Edwyn Ramos was halted after each player captured one set.

In doubles, Derek James and Erik Martinez of Biola defeated Pasquale Procaccino and Sahaj Somani, 6-1. UR got even immediately when Runija Fang and Fujimaki posted a 6-4 victory at #1 doubles over Logan Blair and Quentin Lau. The #3 doubles team of Edwyn Ramos and David Garcia wrapped up the doubles point with a 6-4 win over Yifan Shen and Tanmay Thakkar.

Sahaj Somani
Somani won both of his singles matches.
Rochester snared its first team point when Somani defeated Lau, 6-3, 6-2 at #5 singles. Biola got the team scoring back to a 3-1 lead after James defeated Shen, 6-3, 6-1 at #3 singles. The match was clinched at #6 singles, Garcia topping Mark Zolotukhin, 6-0, 6-2.

Thakkar earned the second UR team point at #4 singles, 6-2, 6-4 over Andres Meneses. Blair defeated Fang, 6-0, 7-5 at #2. At #1 singles, Ramos won the opening set, 6-3, but Fujimaki nearly matched him completely with a 6-4 win in set two. A third set was not played.

The UR men ran off their ninth consecutive win with the victory over Haverford earlier in the day. The 9-0 start is Rochester's best since the 1962-63 team started 10-0 and finished 10-1. The 1960-61 UR team began 9-0.

As it has done all year long, the team worked hard for the victory. Rochester won three singles matches in three sets and Haverford captured one. Fujimaki defeated Josh Moskovitz, 6-1, 6-1, at #1 singles. Moskovitz is ranked #14 regionally. Mark Solotukhin captured the other UR straight set singles win, 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 against Arnva Patodia at #6 singles.

The three-set winners in singles were Fang at #2 (6-7 (5-7), 6-1, 10-7) over Kevin Yan, Thakkar against Pranav Krishnan (2-6, 6-2, 6-2) at #4, and Somani, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 against Nick Sweeney at #5. Haverford won its point at #3 singles. George Jian defeated Shen, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4.
