Coming off a night where the Yellowjackets drained 16 shots from beyond the arc, Rochester came up short against No. 7 Amherst by a final score of 75-67. In the loss, Rochester shot 44.2% from the floor and 7 of 25 from downtown.
Following a three by Amherst to open up the game,
Andrew Lundstrom nailed a three of his own to even the score at three. Over the next few minutes, however, Amherst proceeded to pull away, going on an 11 point run to make the score 14-3.
Rochester would answer with a run of their own, narrowing the score down to 14-12 with 13:39 remaining in the half. The two teams would go on to trade runs and baskets for the remainder of the half. The Yellowjackets found themselves down 38-30 at the break.
In the first half, Rochester shot 11 of 22 from the floor and 25% from beyond the arc.
Brendan O'Shea, who had a season-high last night with 16 points, led the way at the half for UR with 7 points. Lundstrom,
Jacob Wittig, and
Ryan Algier each posted 6 points in the half for the Yellowjackets.
Rochester would open the second half and by chipping away at the Mammoth's lead. The Yellowjackets would pull within one on numerous occasions, but just could not quite get over the hump, losing by a final of75-67. In the end, UR shot 23 of 52 from the field, 28% from three, and 14 of 23 at the line.
O'Shea led the team in scoring, posting a new season-high of 17 points, and also contributed with six boards. Algier finished with 14 points and 4 rebounds. Lundstrom posted 13 points and 4 rebounds. Wittig finished with 6 points and 6 assists.
Ryan Clamage and
Patrick Benka were each held to single digits offensively. Clamage, coming off double-double in the first round, finished with eight points and six rebounds. Benka, who drained six three-pointers last night, was held to just 1-3 shooting for a total of three points.
With the loss, Rochester's fantastic season came to an end. The Yellowjackets finished the season 21-6. This was the 4th season under Coach
Luke Flockerzi that UR finished with 20+ wins, and 13th time overall.
"I'm so proud of how this team fought" Lundstrom stated after the game.
It was not quite the end that the Yellowjackets were looking for. But as John Wooden once said, "Success comes from knowing that you did your best to become the best that you are capable of becoming".
