Rochester Splits Doubleheader with Cortland

The University of Rochester softball team had their home opener this afternoon. It was an eventful two games, the Yellowjackets were able to take home one win.

Things were not looking good for Rochester in the first game of the doubleheader. Just four pitches into the game, the Red Dragons jumped all over Elizabeth Bourne's pitch for a solo shot, to make the game 1-0. It would be a pitcher's duel for the rest of the first game.

Fast forward to the bottom of the seventh, Cortland still holds a 1-0 lead and has not allowed a base runner to this point. Harleigh Kaczegowicz ended Cady Walt's bid for a perfect game after ripping a single down the third base line to put the tying run on. Meghan Bocyck laid down a perfect bunt and beat out the throw to first. After a throwing error to third, Kaczegowicz came around to score the tying run. Alizah Ayon stepped into the plate with the go ahead run on second. Facing an 0-2 count with no one out, Ayon launched one over the left field wall to give the Yellowjackets a 3-1 victory in dramatic fashion.

Bourne got the win for Rochester, pitching a complete game. She only allowed one earned run, and struck out one red dragon. Ayon, Bocyck, and Kaczegowicz had UR's only hits in the game.

The Yellowjackets got off to a better start in game two. After Addy Szczerba got out of the top of the first with no runs allowed, Rochester jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first after a Toni Anne Hahn double allowed Ayon and Kaczegowicz to cross home safely.

After Cortland scored in the second and third to tie the game at two, Ashley Votta hit the foul pole in right to give the Red Dragons a 4-2 lead. The Red Dragons would add another run in the top of the of the 5th on a fielder's choice and a throwing error.

In the bottom of the 6th, down 5-2 with 2 runners on, Kaczegowicz steps up to the plate a launches one over the wall in left field to tie the game at 5. However, the Yellowjackets would fall by a final score of 6-5 after Cortland answered with a solo shot in the top of the 7th.

Between the two games, Bourne went 1-1 with just two earned runs on 10 innings pitched. Szczerba went four innings pitched, with three earned runs. Rochester had 10 hits in the second game.

Rochester moves to 3-9 on the season. The Yellowjackets will play a doubleheader next Tuesday April 2nd, as crosstown opponent St. John Fisher College comes in for a nonconference game.
