SOUTHSIDE FIELD – After defeat Nazareth College in both games of a doubleheader yesterday, the University of Rochester softball team faced off against Utica College on Wednesday. UR would win both games to improve to 12-10 and winners of nine straight.
Game 1: Rochester 10 Utica 2 (5 inn)
Rochester took advantage of an early lead in game one. In the bottom of the second,
Jessica Conforti singled to center field, driving in
Anne Marie Cortes to open up the scoring. The Yellowjackets would add two more runs in the inning, one on a
Marissa Russo ground out to first and the other on a
Sammi Re groundout to the pitcher.
Utica would narrow the gap, making into 3-2 heading into the bottom of the fourth.
Lydia Petricca proceeded to ground out to short and drive in Conforti to give UR a two run cushion.
In the bottom of the 5
th, the Rochester offense blew the game wide open and then ended it. Conforti doubled, allowing
Toni Anne Hahn and
Kathleen Desmond to cross home safely. Conforti late scored on a fielding error by the pitcher.
Harleigh Kaczegowicz singled and
Elizabeth Bourne came home to make it 8-2. After
Alexis Pope hit a sac-fly to left to drive in Russo, Hahn singled to short to drive in Re, ending the game with a 10-2 win.
Kaczegowicz finished game one going 3-for-4 with an RBI. Conforti had three RBIs.
Bourne picked up her fifth win of the season, pitching a complete game allowing four hits and just one earned run.
Game 2: Rochester 5 Utica 2
While Game 1 was full of scoring for UR, Game 2 was quite different, with no one scoring until the sixth inning.
Hannah Leahy picked up her fifth win, pitching a complete game while allowing just two earned runs.
In the bottom half of the sixth,
Alizah Ayon finally put runs on the board, singling through the left side to bring Pope and Kaczegowicz home.
Gianna Melillo then doubled to left to bring Ayon home. Conforti decided to add more to her RBI total for the day, hitting a single to left center to drive Cortes and Hahn in. The Yellowjackets would head into the 7
th inning up 5-0.
After letting two runs score in the top half of the 7
th with just one away, Leahy proceeded to strikeout Nicole Rice for the second out and then forced Sara Stransky to groundout to short, securing the 5-2 victory.
Ayon and Conforti each went 1-for-3 with a pair of RBIs in the second game. Seven Yellowjackets recorded a hit in Game 2.
Rochester will travel to Ithaca College on Saturday to resume conference play. First game of the doubleheader will start at 1pm.
