SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Liberty League softball playoff participants and seedings are still undetermined as the season enters its final two days on Sunday and Monday.
Rochester sits at 7-5 in the league (17-17 overall) heading into a Sunday doubleheader against Rochester Institute of Technology. The starting time has been set at 2:30 pm to give the playing surface a little more time to dry out. It will be senior day on the River Campus with the Yellowjackets honoring their four seniors before the game:
Rachael Pletz,
Gianna Melillo,
Elizabeth Bourne, and
Harleigh Kaczegowicz.
Â
The Yellowjackets stayed in the hunt for a playoff spot by splitting with Union College on Saturday. Rochester's bats awakened in game two, getting 12 hits, including four for extra bases, and nine runs. Union won the opener, 4-0, and Rochester won game two, 9-6.
Â
Game One: Union 4, Rochester 0:
Union's Makayla Koehler pitched a complete-game three hitter with one walk and three strikeouts for the Dutchwomen. Rochester mustered singles by
Sammi Re,
Alexis Pope, and
Harleigh Kaczegowicz.
Â
UC scored one in the third on an RBI double by Dana Dolinko. Rochester put two aboard in the sixth inning trying to find the equalizer. After Re bounced out, Pope singled up the middle.
Alizah Ayon popped to short. Kaczegowicz stroked a single through the right side but Koehler induced an inning-ending grounder that forced Kaczegowicz at second. The Dutchwomen pushed three across in the bottom of the sixth. The first four runners reached base on a double, a single (and fielding error which led to a run), a hit batsman, and another double. Those brought home two runs and the final run was scored on an RBI groundout.
Â
Elizabeth Bourne pitched six innings, allowing nine hits, four runs (three earned), one walk, three strikeouts, and one hit batsman.
Â
Game Two: Rochester 9, Union 6:
For the first four innings, there were plenty of offensive fireworks. Rochester scored two in the first, then single runs in the next three innings. Those included a solo home run down the left field line by
Alexis Pope. Union had single runs in the first two innings, scored two in the fourth to tie it, then answered the Pope home run with a single run in the bottom of the fourth to tie the score.
Â
Hahn got a run home in the sixth, then started a key DP.
The Yellowjackets took advantage of some fielding miscues in the sixth to push ahead, 8-5. Pope singled through the right side and when the ball eluded the outfielders, she raced to third. Union walked Ayon intentionally and she was replaced by
Kathleen Desmond.
Â
With Kaczegowicz at bat, Desmond took off for second. Union didn't bite and Desmond stole second base. Kaczegowicz promptly doubled down the left field line for two runs. Pletz hit back to the box. Kaczegowicz got trapped off second and was thrown out trying to get back.
Marissa Russo ran for Pletz at first.
Toni Anne Hahn singled down the right field line, moving Russo to third. She stole home for an 8-5 lead.
Â
Hahn made a good play in the field in Union's half. Kendall Rogoff drew a leadoff walk from
Addy Szczerba. Kim Puzo, who was 2-3 with a run scored and an RBI, hit a grounder to the left of second base. Hahn grabbed it, stepped quickly on second base, then fired to Ayon at first base which completed the double play. Julia Boule struck out, ending the inning.
Â
Each team scored a run in the seventh.
Jessica Conforti singled to left. Re's grounder to the left side was booted. Conforti got to second. She scored when Pope's ground ball forced Re at second base but the throw to first sailed wide for an error and a 9-5 lead. Kelsey Hartsoe led off the Union seventh with a home run, but Szczerba set down the Dutchwomen in order after that.
Â
Szczerba pitched 4.2 innings with three hits allowed, two earned runs, four walks, and three strikeouts. She got the victory.
Hannah Leahy went the first 2.1 innings, allowing four hits, four runs (three earned), three walks, and one strikeout.
Â
For Union, Dolinko started (3.0 IP, six hits, four runs – three earned – three walks, no strikeouts). Koehler relieved to start the fourth. In 2.1 innings, she gave up five hits, four earned runs, walked three, and struck out one. She was assessed the loss. Catie Rater finished up for Union: 1.2 IP, one hit, one unearned run, no walks, and two strikeouts.
