PRINCE ATHLETIC COMLEX - After scoring 15 against Ithaca on Wednesday, the Yellowjackets took a different approach against Clarkson on Saturday afternoon. With both games of the doubleheader ending 2-1, the Yellowjackets ended up splitting the doubleheader with the Golden Knights.
Â
UR sent
Garrett Renslow to the mound in Game 1. In his last outing, he picked up a complete game shutout against Skidmore. The 6-foot-5 right hander picked up right where he left off, striking out the first Clarkson batter on four pitches and retiring each of the first three batters in the top of the first.
Â
However, the Golden Knights would strike first, scoring one run in the top of the second on a Joe Stockman single to right field. Â
Â
Clarkson's lead would not last.
Jack Herman singled in the bottom half of the inning. Herman then proceeded to advance over to third on
Jake Hertz's single to left. Herman would later cross home safely after a wild pitch to even the score at one.
Â
In the top of the 5th, Clarkson regained the lead on a homer to left. That would be the end of the scoring in Game 1, with the Yellowjackets falling 2-1.
Â
Renslow pitched a complete game, giving up just four hits and striking out eight. However, he did pick up his second loss of the season.
Â
Rochester was held to just four hits in the first game. Herman finished Game 1 2-for-3 at the plate with a run scored.
Aiden Finch and Hertz each went 1-for-3.
Â
Game 2 would end up as a much better result for the Yellowjackets.
Jon Turk got through the first allowing just one hit.
Â
The second inning of game 2 was just like the game 1, Stockman opened up the scoring on a single to right field. From that point on, Turk was in full control. Turk would go on to pitch seven innings, allowing just four hits, one earned run, and getting one strikeout.
Â
In the bottom of the seventh, down 1-0, Finch stepped in with two on and two out. He launched one to left that looked like an easy out, but the left fielder and center fielder collided, allowing Finch to drive both
David Rieth and
Brian McKinsey in.
Â
Hank Powers and
Brendan Shamieh took care of the final two innings on the mound, and Rochester won by a final of 2-1.
Â
Finch finished game two 1-for-4 with a double.
Ryland McNabb went 2-for-4 with a double in his second start of the season. Rieth, Pickering, Matzat, and McKinsey all had hits on the afternoon.
Â
The Yellowjackets improve to 12-10 overall and 6-4 in conference play. UR will play Clarkson in another doubleheader tomorrow afternoon, with the first game starting at noon.
