PRINCE ATHLETIC COMPLEX – For the second time in less than 48 hours, William Turritin scored in the 90
th minute to snap a tie and give John Carroll University a victory in men's soccer.
This time, he did it on a penalty kick against the University of Rochester at Edwin Fauver Stadium in the Brian Prince Athletic Complex. His timing was nearly identical. He made this kick at 89:25 to give the Blue Streaks (2-0) the victory. On Friday, Turritin scored his first career goal at 89:29 in a 3-2 victory over Oberlin College.
Rochester (0-2) equalized on a penalty kick of its own, this one scored with 4:22 remaining. It came from
Josh Cooley, awarded after
James Barata was tripped in the box. Cooley nearly gave the Yellowjackets a late second half lead. In a packed penalty area, he spun inside the penalty mark only to see his shot blocked by the defense and scrambled away.
Turrittin provided a 1-0 lead for the visitors late in the first half. Steady pressure by the Blue Streaks resulted in five corner kicks in just over two minutes. On the fifth CK, Turrittin lifted the ball from the right corner to the back post where Matt Nigro knocked it into the goal at 43:41.
Nigro was steady and strong in the center of the JCU defensive penalty area, intercepting passes and knocking the ball away. Rochester tried to find Cooley on a breakaway with 20 minutes left in regulation. Nigro recovered and cut off Cooley's path to the center of the pitch.
Not long after that, UR's
Zach Lawlor shot for the bottom left corner, but JCU keeper Thomas Gallina saved it. He finished with four saves. In the mad scramble for the loose ball, Cooley tried to power it in, but Adam Haas cleared it off the line. UR goalkeeper
Hugh Curran also made four saves.
Rochester kept pressing. The Yellowjackets earned a free kick along the left sideline.
Cristian Baltier angled it to the back post with
Aidan Miller running to the spot. He tried to flick it but the ball glanced over the end line.
