GENESEO, NY – After a strong start to the season on Friday, the University of Rochester women's soccer team ran into a tough SUNY Geneseo squad on Sunday afternoon, succumbing to the host Knights by a 2-0 score.
Geneseo, who is among others receiving votes in the preseason Division III coaches poll, improves to 2-0, while the Yellowjackets drop to 1-1 so far in 2019.
The Knights defense was the story in this one, limiting the Yellowjackets to just two shot attempts in the contest, both off the foot of first-year forward
Madison Drenowatz. Geneseo meanwhile, peppered UR keeper
Emma Schechter with 18 total shots, seven of which were on frame. Schechter finished with five saves on the day.
Both Geneseo goals came in the opening half. Sarah Loprieno scored the first tally of the day in the 7th minute, one timing a failed clear attempt by the Yellowjackets. Her shot cracked the left post, but deflected off past Schechter and into the net for the 1-0 lead.
The next Geneseo goal then came in the 31st minute when Domenica Piccoli chipped a shot into the lower left corner of the net from about the penalty marker spot in the middle of the box. The assist went to Hannah Sullivan who set up the play after gaining possession along the right end line.
Drenowatz's two shot attempts came midway through the first half. The first was wide left in the 20th minute, while her next came five minutes later but was saved by Geneseo goalie Julia McDonald.
After intermission, the Yellowjackets were even on the stat sheet in corners with the Knights, as both sides took four. Two of these came in the 49th and 50th minute. The other two came in the final seven minutes of the game, but the Geneseo defense stood tall in not allowing another shot attempt.
Rochester is back in action on Wednesday evening at home against Keuka College at 7 pm.
