PRINCE ATHLETIC COMPLEX – It was a dominating effort on both ends of the field as the University of Rochester field hockey team defeated Nazareth College 5-0 at Edwin Fauver Stadium on Tuesday evening.
The win levels UR's record at 4-4, snapping a two-match losing streak, while the Golden Flyers see their record drop to 4-4.
Rochester did all of its damage in the opening half, scoring twice in the first quarter and three times in the second.
Colleen Maillie blasted a shot from the right wing for the opening goal of the match in the 6th minute off a penalty corner pass from teammate
Juney Lee.
With a minute left in the opening quarter,
Amanda Strenk saw her penalty corner shot get behind the Nazareth keeper but kept out of the goal by a defenders foot, leading to a penalty stroke chance. Strenk took the stroke and deposited it into the goal for a 2-0 lead after the opening 15 minutes.
Strenk had two goals.
Two minutes into the second period, senior
Catherine Hauser recorded her team leading sixth goal of the season sweeping in a rebound shot from Maillie. The initial chance in the flurry saw
Kira Ozer's attempt from in close get cleared off the line by Alexandra Livesey for a defensive save.
Nazareth earned its lone penalty corner of the game in the 24th minute, but the Yellowjacket defense broke up the threat before any scoring chance emerged. The Golden Flyers were held completely off the scoreboard in this one, not generating a shot attempt over the course of the contest.
Strenk recorded her second goal of the game at 25:49, chopping down a high ball that was deflected off a Maillie shot. UR's next shot, taken three minutes later by
Emma Schlechter, also found the back of the cage, with
Nikki Mercer converting a nice drop pass back to Schlechter who found the goal from the right wing about 10 yards out.
In the second half, Rochester amassed 13 more shots and six penalty corners but could not add to its lead.
Maya Haigis had a shot nearly go in with six minutes remaining in the game, but Mikaylee Whalen made a strong defensive save at the left post for Nazareth.
Golden Flyer keeper Amanda Chuttey ended the game with nine saves while
Kate Kujawa earned the shutout for Rochester.
The Yellowjackets next match is Saturday at William Smith College, as Rochester opens its Liberty League conference slate.
