Rochester Earns Sixth Straight Shutout Win in Men's Soccer

PRINCE ATHLETIC COMPLEX: Rochester ran its men's soccer winning streak to six in a row – all by shutout – with a 3-0 victory over St. John Fisher College on Tuesday evening at Edwin Fauver Stadium.

The Yellowjackets improved to 6-2 overall. The six shutouts surpass the five straight shutouts posted by the 2017 team. St. John Fisher slipped to 1-7 overall. The Cardinals lost their first six, then defeated Empire 8 rival Hartwick College, 3-2, in overtime last Saturday. Fisher goalkeeper Aaron Smith finished with three saves,

UR's goals came from Josh Cooley, Andrew Moglianesi, and Mitch Volis. The Yellowjackets hit the woodwork three times and had a number of other shots drift just wide of goal or get knocked out for a corner kick.

The defense had to work hard to get the shutout. The match was 19 minutes old when Fisher's Justin Bonetto maneuvered for shooting space in the area. Will Eisold dashed over to clear the ball out of danger.

Eisold's heads-up play aided the shutout win.

Goalkeeper Hugh Curran needed two saves for the shutout. His first came on the hour. Fisher broke through in a 2-on-1 and slid a pass to Joe Balls. He fired from just inside the penalty area. Curran sprawled and palmed the shot away at the low right corner for a corner kick. That turned out to be harmless. Curran got his second save five minutes later, grabbing a shot by Bonetto from the top of the box.

Rochester produced its first goal from a good pass by Zach Lawlor and a timely wide-open shot by Cooley at the midpoint of the first half. Lawlor ran down a ball along the left touchline and passed to Cooley running into space in the center of the penalty area. He had time to settle the pass, then fire it inside the right post.

Lawlor was the middle man in the second goal, put home by Moglianesi 11 minutes after the restart. Rochester earned a throw-in deep on the right sideline. With white shirts prevalent in the box, Aidan Miller threw it to Lawlor positioned on the near post. He settled it and nudged a pass just outside the crease. Moglianesi drove it inside the post to double the lead,

The final goal came with just over 14 minutes to play. Cooley was fouled going down the right side and when the advantage disappeared, a free kick was awarded 22 yards from goal. Volis measured the scene, then drove it inside the far post.
