Hauser Ties Single Game Scoring Mark in 8-0 Field Hockey Win

PRINCE ATHLETIC COMPLEX – Senior Catherine Hauser tied a single-game field hockey goalscoring record as Rochester defeated Houghton College, 8-0, at Edwin Fauver Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

It was the home opener for the Yellowjackets (2-1 overall). Rochester was idle for the past six days. The Yellowjackets lost, 1-0, to #16 Christopher Newport University at Spooky Nook in Pennsylvania. Houghton College is 1-3.

Hauser scored four goals. She became the first player in 31 years to score that many. Nancy Melvin scored four against the University of Buffalo in 1985, Paula D'Ambra scored four vs. St. Lawrence in 1986, and Amy Beth Deep netted four against MIT in 1988.

Colleen Maillie and Kira Ozer had a goal and an assist apiece. Nikki Mercer and Emma Schlechter had single goals. Juney Lee and Amanda Guido each had an assist.

Rochester put steady pressure on the Highlander goal. The Yellowjackets scored one in the first, four in the second and three in the third (two of those by Hauser).

In goal, Houghton goaltender Sarah Olandt made 10 saves. Rochester's Kate Kujawa had one save.

Ozer had a goal and an assist.

Hauser opened the scoring with 3:03 left in the first. She tucked the ball into the right corner from just to the left of the center circle. The second quarter was barely three minutes old when Lee's penalty corner found Maillie at the right side of the circle. She whistled a hard shot through a tangle of people in the goalmouth and it found the left corner.

Ozer drove home a pass from Maillie, then set up Mercer for a 4-0 lead. Hauser scored in a goalmouth scramble not long before halftime for the 5-0 cushion. In the third period, she scored twice in less than two minutes, getting the hat trick after her first shot was knocked down by the defense. She tied the scoring record with 10:41 left in the third. Olandt stood up to a crowd of blue jerseys in the circle and knocked down Hauser's shot. It rolled along the goalline. Before Olandt could sweep a stick onto it, Hauser reached it and tucked it into the right corner. Schlecter completed the goalscoring with a point blank shot from the center of the circle with Guido assisting on the right side.

The Yellowjackets will be home on Tuesday at 6 pm against SUNY Cortland. Houghton hosts Oneonta State on Wednesday at 7 pm.
