UR Outlasts CWRU in Overtime Thriller

The Yellowjackets men's basketball team secured a victory through overtime over Case Western Reserve 88-86 on Friday evening at the Louis Alexander Palestra.
 
A missed three-point attempt by Case Western Reserve's Robert Faller at the buzzer secured the win for the Yellowjackets.
 
The win extends Rochester's record to 11-4, 2-2 in UAA. CWRU falls to 8-7, 1-3 UAA as a result.
 
As a team, Rochester opened overtime by making four their first five field goals.  
 
Gang was successful on consecutive free throws with 1:28 remaining to grant Rochester an 85-80 advantage. Under a minute later, he was responsible for another layup to extend the lead to 87-80. He finished the game with 11 points, six assists, and five rebounds. 
 
With 26 seconds remaining in overtime, Case Western Reserve's Robert Faller hit an and-one following a three-point attempt to keep the contest within reach. 
 
Following an in-bound violation by Rochester, Masiulionis hit both of his respective free throws for Case Western Reserve. 
 
A defensive rebound by Matt Niemczura resulted in one free throw made, extending the lead to 88-86 for Rochester, eventually closing out the game. 
 
Early rebounds from Ryan Algier saw him take in three boards in the first five minutes of action. He contributed with an additional team-high 11 points in the first half, and ended the game with a double-double consisting of 23 points and 11 rebounds. 
 
A quick 11-2 run granted Rochester an early 18-11 lead. During the stretch, four different members of the Yellowjackets scored. 
 
Rochester utilized the charity stripe throughout the opening half, going 12-of-17 from the line. By halftime, the Yellowjackets held a 34-27 lead.  
 
Five consecutive points from Kailan Lee in four seconds opened Rochester's lead up to 51-43 with 13:44 to play in the second half. He finished the game with 21 points and six rebounds. 
 
The game remained within reach for a majority of the second half, as 16 personal fouls against Rochester in the second half resulted in 22 free throw attempts for Case Western Reserve. Neither team managed to get in a rhythm offensively due to a total of 60 fouls called.
 
Multiple late three-point shots by Case Western Reserve's Ignas Masiulionis cut Rochester's lead to 72-68. 
 
After consecutive free throws by Case Western Reserve, Ross Gang retaliated with a jumper of his own to give the Yellowjackets a 74-70 lead. 
 
A basket by Case Western Reserve's Cole Frilling turned Friday's contest into a one-possession game. With nine seconds remaining in regulation, Masiulionis hit another shot in order to send the game into overtime.   
 
The Yellowjackets finished 29-of-67 (43.3%) from the field, brought in 45 rebounds, and finished with 13 assists. CWRU ended with 23-of-52 (42.2%) from the field and secured 37 rebounds.  
 
Next up, Rochester will host Carnegie Mellon University on Sunday with tipoff at 12pm. As for Case Western Reserve, they will travel to play Emory University on the same day.
