A contested matchup ended in the favor of Division I-ranked Merrimack College during their 6-1 win over the Rochester men's tennis team on Wednesday in Puerto Rico.
With the loss, the Yellowjackets drop to a 3-6 record on the season. As for Merrimack, they improve to a 6-4 overall record, and are winners of five of their last six matches in dual play.
In doubles play, senior
Yifan Shen and sophomore
Runjia Fang were able to display pressure at the top spot, but eventually fell to Denis Davydov and Alex Fedorov by a 6-4 margin.
Sophomore
Mark Zolotukhin and graduate student
Matt Resnikoff encountered a similar result at the #2 spot after losing 6-4 to Merrimack's Jonathan Garcia and Alec MacKay. This marked the first time this season in which Zolotukhin and Resnikoff were paired together.Â
Merrimack was able to complete the sweep in doubles play before advancing to singles play.
Shen, who was the last to finish his respective match in singles play at the #2 spot, ended up beating Garcia in 7-6, 7-6 fashion. The win marked Shen's 10th individual victory of the season; a current team-high.
Junior
Connor Wagner was another bright spot for Rochester at the #5 spot, contesting Merrimack's Pedro Mancini. Merrimack eventually earned the point in a 6-4, 6-3 win.
