Garrett Renslow, a recent graduate of the University and member of the Yellowjacket baseball program, etched his name into the UR record books by being named a repeat 1st Team Academic All-American as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Â
He becomes just the fourth student-athlete in school history, and first baseball player, to earn multiple 1st Team Academic All-America® honors, joining football players Jeremy Hurd (92-93) and Nicholas Zappia (05-06) and lacrosse player Kareen Kreutziger (99-00).
Â
Renslow's award is the ninth in Rochester baseball history and 109th overall for the University. The three 11-player Academic All-America teams are selected from a group of 1st Team Academic All-District picks from eight districts across Division III. Renslow was one of six pitchers selected from 16 All-District candidates.
Â
The Castleton, New York native had tremendous exploits both on and off the field during his four years at Rochester. He graduated last month with a dual degree in neuroscience and psychology and a cumulative grade point average of 3.98.
Â
Recently, Renslow was named as the Peter DiPasquale Male Scholar Athlete Award winner from the UR Athletic Department. He was elected Phi Beta Kappa during the spring semester and named a Lysle 'Spike' Garnish Scholar during the fall.
Â
The three-time Liberty League All-Academic selection also earned Dean's List honors in every eligible semester, was a Provost Circle Scholar and plans to attend medical school. He was a teacher's assistant for three classes, volunteered at Strong Memorial Hospital and was a part of the PATHS Program at the Mt. Hope Family Center.
Â
Renslow is the 4th UR player to earn multiple
1st Team AAA honors.
On the field, his career was littered with success.
Â
In 30 appearances on the mound with the Yellowjackets, he was 10-6 overall with 3 saves. Renslow split time between the bullpen and as a starter, making 18 starts during his career. Overall, he tossed 109.6 innings and accumulated a 3.12 ERA. He also struck out 107 batters while walking only 43. He ends his career inside UR's top-10 in strikeouts per nine innings (8.78).
Â
One of his career highlights came during the 2019 Liberty League Tournament when he tossed a 9-inning, no-hitter against Rensselaer. Just two days later he then started the winner-take-all game 7 of the tournament against Clarkson and earned the win, helping lift Rochester to its first ever Liberty League Tournament title.
Â
His athletic awards include being named 1st Team All-Region by the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) and D3baseball.com in 2019. He also earned 1st Team All-Liberty League honors last season and was poised for another strong year in 2020 after being named a 2020 Preseason All-American by D3baseball.com.
Â
Overall, nine Academic All-America selections in 2020 are repeat choices from last year. Eight of those student-athletes were named to the 1st Team this season, including Renslow's pitching counterpart Christian Slattery from California Lutheran. Elizabethtown outfielder Derek Manning, a three-time Academic All-American, was picked as the Academic All-American Team member of the Year for 2020.
