Saints Edge Rochester In Double Overtime

CANTON, NY – Host St. Lawrence University was able to grab a double-overtime victory over the University of Rochester field hockey team on Sunday afternoon, winning 2-1 at North Country Field.

The Saints recorded the game-winner in the 73rd minute off the stick of Suzanne L'Hommedieu to improve to 9-5 and 3-2 the Liberty League.

Rochester's goal came on a penalty stroke late in regulation from Amanda Strenk, with the senior recording her 19th of the season, moving into the top-5 for a single year in goals at Rochester.

UR drops to 10-4 overall and 3-2 in the conference, sitting tied SLU, Vassar and RPI for second in the conference standings with two games left to go in the Liberty League schedule.

The host Saints held the edge in the opening period in shots, leading 4-1, but neither team was able to find the back of the cage. Three of SLU's shots were on target in the opening 15 minutes, but keeper Abigail Walrond was able to make the saves to keep the game scoreless. Walrond finished with seven saves in the contest.

In the second, Rochester applied pressure early, earning two corners in the first two minutes. Those corners led to shots from Leona Fisher and Strenk, both of which were saved by Saints keeper Lucy Adiutori.

St. Lawrence followed with the games opening goal in the 21st minute, coming from Morgan Misiaszek of an assist from Marlee Paterson. The goal was Misiaszek's second of the year for SLU and came off a tip in at the right post off a center circle pass.

Both teams had their chances in the third period, including Rochester who earned five corners and took five total shots, but neither team could score, so the count remained 1-0 in favor of the Saints.

Early in the fourth, Rochester had another flurry of chances, posting three corners and three shots, all of which were saved by Adiutori in goal. Juney Lee, Vivienne Tucker and Fisher all had chances kicked away by the SLU keeper who finished with 11 stops in the game.

With under three minutes left in regulation, a St. Lawrence foul on a potential goal scoring chance yielded a penalty stroke for the Yellowjackets. Strenk calmly deposited her shot into the cage through a steady rain and evened the score, sending it to extra time.

Rochester held most of the possession in the first overtime and had a golden chance in the 66th minute after a penalty corner shot by Lee. Her shot from the right wing slipped past Adiutori but a Saints defender was there to prevent the ball from going over the line, keeping the game tied.

In the second OT, a stretch of three straight corners for St. Lawrence finally yielded the game-winning goal scored by L'Hommedieu. The shot was a low, hard skidding attempt from the right wing which found the low right corner of the cage.

Rochester returns to action next Friday with a big matchup against Vassar at home starting at 4 pm. Next Sunday UR is back on the road for a league game at RPI.
