PRINCE ATHLETIC COMPLEX – The University of Rochester field hockey senior class was sent off in the final regular season game of the season in style, with UR earning a 3-1 victory over SUNY Geneseo on Saturday at Fauver Stadium.
Seniors accounted for all three goals and earned the win in goal for Rochester who completes the regular season with a 12-6 record. Up next for the Yellowjackets is the Liberty League playoffs, with 4th-seeded Rochester taking on conference regular season champ Ithaca on Wednesday at 7 pm.
Amanda Strenk recorded two tallies for the Yellowjackets and classmate
Leona Fisher earned the third UR goal in the fourth quarter.
Abigail Walrond made five saves in goal for the win. Two other members of the class of 2022,
Vivienne Tucker and
Juney Lee, added assists for Rochester.
Strenk's two goals tie her with Michelle Relin for the single-season goals record at Rochester, boosting her total to 22 on the year. Her 46 points also rank in the top-5 in single-season history.
In the opening quarter, neither team could get much offense going, as just four shots were taken combined. Strenk opened the scoring though on UR's only attempt of the quarter, blasting a top of the circle penalty corner shot into the cage for a 1-0 lead. Tucker picked up the assist on the corner pass.
Geneseo ramped up the pressure offensively in the second, firing seven shots, four of which were on goal, but Walrond kept the Knights off the board making saves on all four of those attempts.
Fisher scored an insurance goal in the 4th quarter.
In the 20th minute, Geneseo earned two corners and translated those into four shots. The Knights had three straight shots on the second corner, with Emma Paris' attempt being blocked and two in close chances by Katrina Clare saved.
Geneseo scored the equalizer in the 37th minute on a deflection in front by Clare, her team leading ninth of the season. After a corner insert by Sadie Mitchell, Cassidy Sturdevant settled and slipped a pass behind her to Olivia Hernick. Hernick, at the edge of the circle, took a shot and saw Clare deflect it perfectly inside the right post for the goal.
After the tying goal, Rochester ramped up its pressure in the Geneseo end, which ultimately led to the go-ahead and eventual game-winning goal.
In the 39th minute, UR earned a corner and Lee had a get passed goalie Sarah Quinlan, but Geneseo's Mitchell was in perfect position to make a defensive save.
The rebound bounced out to
Nikki Mercer who took another shot which hit Mitchell's leg and led to an awarded penalty stroke. Strenk calmly stepped up to the dot and notched her sixth penalty stroke goal of the year, tying the single-season goals record in the process.
A minute later, and unlucky Lee had another shot cleared off the line for a defensive save, this time by Geneseo's Paris, coming off a Yellowjacket penalty corner. Rochester ended up with a 10-8 corner advantage in the game.
The games' final goal came in the 55th minute of the third of three straight corners earned by Rochester. The insert pass from Tucker went to Lee at the top of the circle who sent a pass along the left wing about nine yards out to Fisher. Fisher took a nice sweep at the ball and placed her shot just inside the left post and over the pad of Quinlan for the insurance goal, making the score 3-1.
Prior to the game, UR's seniors were honored for their accomplishments over the last four years with a senior day celebration. Those honored included Strenk, Tucker, Lee, Fisher, Walrond, Mercer,
Julia McDonough,
Alex Pritchard and
Savannah Schisler.
