#16 Calvin Defeats Rochester In NCAA 1st Round

DELAWARE, OH – A high-powered offense from #16 ranked Calvin University ended the University of Rochester men's soccer season Friday night, defeating the Yellowjackets 4-0 in the first round of the 2021 NCAA Division III Tournament at Ohio Wesleyan University.

The Knights (16-3-2), who entered the game fourth in Division III with total goals with 69 in 20 contests, scored twice in each half and limited Rochester (9-4-4) to ten total shots in the game, five of which were on goal.

Rochester was led offensively by senior Colin Canning who fired four shots in the contest. Six others took one shot for the Yellowjackets.

Calvin got the scoring started in the 13th minute, with Mason Smith connecting on a goal off a pass from teammate Zach Flowerday. Flowerday was able to slip a pass through the Yellowjacket defense and Smith deposited his shot into the right side of the net for the early lead.

Two minutes later, Smith again looked to score, but this time was denied by UR keeper Santino Lupica-Tondo. Lupica-Tondo finished the game with six saves while facing 20 total shots, ten of which were on goal.

UR's first shot of the contest came in the 19th minute from Nate Lazzara, but Daniel Wunder was there for the Knights in goal, making one of his five saves in the shutout victory.

The lead doubled to 2-0 in the 24th minute for the Knights when Calvin's Aguma Muhumuza headed in a corner kick from Smith. Just a few minutes earlier, Flowerday cranked a shot off the crossbar for the Knights.

In the second half, Calvin's Sam Twigg scored six minutes apart to complete the game scoring. In the 56th minute, Twigg connected on a one-timer following a save by Lupica-Tondo for his 17th tally of the season. In the 62nd minute, Twigg collected a drop pass from Chris Schau and scored his second of the game.

Rochester had two solid scoring chances in the 69th minute, the first from Canning and the follow up by Caden Dowd. Canning saw his attempt saved by Wunder in goal, with Dowd hitting the post with the rebound attempt, narrowly missing a goal for the Yellowjackets.

Calvin moves on to the second round to play host Ohio Wesleyan on Saturday evening. OWU defeated Knox College in the other first round matchup at the Delaware regional.
