Yellowjackets vs. Judges in UAA 7th Place Volleyball Match

CLEVELAND – Rochester and Brandeis will play for seventh place in the University Athletic Association volleyball championships on Saturday after both teams went 0-2 in Friday's action. Top-seeded NYU posted a 3-0 victory over the University of Rochester in one quarterfinal match and second seeded Emory University defeated Brandeis in another quarterfinal. In the consolation round, Washington-St. Louis, the fourth seed in the championships, defeated Rochester, 3-0. The Bears were upended by Carnegie Mellon in the quarters. Brandeis lost to sixth-seeded (and host) Case Western Reserve University.

The seventh (UR vs. Brandeis), fifth (Washington vs. Case Western Reserve), and third place (Chicago vs. Carnegie Mellon) matches will be played at 10 am on Saturday, setting the stage for the 1 pm title match between NYU and Emory. The UAA champion receives a Pool A bid to the NCAA Division III National Championships. The playoff field will be announced on Monday afternoon.
 
The Violets defeated the Yellowjackets, 25-15, 25-16, 25-8 to move into the semifinal round. In the consolation round, Washington captured a 25-16, 25-7, 25-18 victory. Brandeis lost, 3-1, to Case (25-19, 17-25, 25-20, 25-22) in the other consolation.
 
Rochester (6-19 after the WUSTL match) spent time trying to find a consistent attacking rhythm against NYU (24-1). The Yellowjacket kill leaders were Megan Gatz and Sonia McGaffigan with five kills each. Kellie McCrea and Areti Tsirikaki had three kills apiece. Zaira Reyes had two service aces. La'i Yuen, Megan Hauer, and Ana Cerezer had six digs apiece.

Washington defended well (three blocks, 47 digs) and served well (10 aces). The Rochester leaders were McGaffigan with five kills, McCrea with four, and Ella Sokolowski with three. Tsirikaki had two aces. Reyes had nine assists, Isabelle Miranda recorded eight. Cerezer dug 11 attacks. Reyes had seven, and Sokolowski had six.
