PRINCE ATHETIC COMPLEX – Rochester earned its eighth shutout of the women's soccer season with a strong effort in a 0-0 double-overtime game against Emory University at Edwin Fauver Stadium on Saturday. It was an excellent effort on Senior Day.
Â
The Yellowjackets seized their fourth shutout in the last six games, this one against one of Division III's elite teams. The Eagles are ranked #21 in the current poll of the United Soccer Coaches. Emory is 11-4-3 overall, 2-3-2 in the University Athletic Association. Rochester is 0-3-4 in the UAA, 6-5-5 overall.
Â
Senior goalkeeper
Emma Schechter made nine saves on 22 overall shots. It was her sixth solo shutout this year (she has shared two) and her 16
th career shutout. Emory put her to the task, particularly near the middle of the first half.
Â
Alexa Sanchez sped down the right and fired over the crossbar. The Eagles recovered the ensuing goal kick and Kylie Hall forced Schechter to drop low and cover up on a low shot. Lauren Mahoney headed a corner kick on net that Schechter kept out with a quick reaction save.
Â
Grover had several chances vs. Emory
The Yellowjackets began to build a rhythm later in the period.
Natalie Kocsis hit a thru ball down the middle, meant for
Syd Coggins. Sanchez hustled back and deflected it away with Coggins starting to find some space in the center of the defense.
Claire Grover sliced down the right slot and chipped the ball for the top left corner, it carried over and settled in the top netting.
Emma Bates was fouled late in the half.
Megan Pung's free kick from straight on drifted over the crossbar.
Â
Emory rotated goalkeepers at halftime, bringing on Emma Miller in place of Emma Platt. Miller finished with two saves. Platt had one. Rochester had 11 shots overall.
Â
Grover had Rochester's best chance in the first hour. She evaded a tackle, then shot from the edge of the penalty area, only to see it go wide left – not by much – at the left post. Ten minutes later, the ball came to Grover from left wing. She played it back out to
Cesca Sheppard who shot it just wide of the top right corner.
Â
Shortly thereafter, Emory nearly broke the tie. Grace Reyer moved upfield, ran into open space on the left, and called for the ball. She got it, shot quickly, and hit the crossbar right near the juncture of the right post.
Â
It was Rochester's chance in the 70
th minute. The ball was loose in the EU penalty area and Miller was out to try to grab it. It bounced away from her. UR's
Hailee Mitchell tried to chip it into the open net, but Emory's Peyton Robertson blocked the shot. Pung made a similar save – desperate situation – in the waning seconds of the first sudden death overtime period. She cleared away a loose ball deep in the penalty area before EU's Lindsey Breskow could get to it with Schechter screened by a combination of blue-and-white-shirted players.
