Yellowjackets Nipped by Herons in Liberty League match

PRINCE ATHLETIC COMPLEX – Both teams turned up the defensive pressure in the second half, yielding just three goals, as William Smith College defeated the University of Rochester, 8-6, in a women's lacrosse game at Edwin Fauver Stadium.

It was the second meeting in two days between the Liberty League rivals. William Smith won, 14-7, on Friday evening on its indoor facility. The Herons, ranked 15th in Division III, improved to 2-1. Rochester is 2-2.

Kendra Jones scored two goals for Rochester. Lucy Haggerty Mary Panepento, Emma Little, and Zoe Sullivan had one goal apiece. Grace Crochiere and Sullivan had assists.

Payton McMahon scored two for William Smith. Molly Davis, Kelsey Williams, Ellie Burns, Rachel Yackley, Anna Murphy, and Chloe McGlynn had solo tallies. Yackel, McMahon, and Allie McGinty had assists.

Carlie BenDavid had 11 saves for Rochester on 19 William Smith shots. Maddie Bamberger had five saves on 11 Rochester shots. The clears were pretty much even, 17-21 for William Smith, 20-24 for Rochester. The Yellowjackets won 10 draws, eight in the first half. WSC had six draws, four in the first 30 minutes. Little won four of the draws for UR. Jones and Panepento collected four ground balls each, BenDavid had six.

WSC jumped ahead, 3-1, after Jones gave Rochester a 1-0 lead 2:29 into the match. It was thrust-and-parry for a while after that. Little cut it to 3-2 and after two WSC goals (5-2 with 8:12 left), Panepento and McMahon swapped scores to leave it 6-3. Sullivan made it 6-4. Davis scored in an advantage situation 32 seconds before halftime for a 7-4 lead.

Haggerty scored for UR nine minutes into the second half, turning home a pass from Crochiere. McGlynn's goal with 6:07 left put the visitors ahead, 8-5. Twenty-five seconds later, Jones tried to throw a high pass to a teammate in the center of the eight-yard circle. It was over her head. It caught everyone by surprise and nestled into the top corner of the net for what turned out to be the 8-6 final.

Rochester is idle next weekend. The Yellowjackets return to Liberty League play on April 9 and 10 against St. Lawrence. UR will host the Saints on April 9 at 4 pm and travel to Canton on April 10 for a 2 pm start.
