GOERGEN ATHLETIC CENTER – It was a thrilling back-and-forth match to end the season for the University of Rochester men's tennis team, winning 5-4 over visiting St. Lawrence University at the Goergen Athletic Center on Wednesday afternoon.
Junior
Adrian Zhang earned the match clinching point, breaking a 4-4 tie overall to push the Yellowjackets to victory, winning in a tight three-set match over Adam Heilbronner.
Zhang won the opening set 6-4, Heilbronner rebounded to win the second 7-5, but Zhang closed strong with a 6-2 win to seal the team victory.
Rochester finishes the abbreviated 2021 season with a 2-3 record. St. Lawrence is 0-4.
The Saints earned a 2-1 lead after doubles play concluded. SLU's Cole Hamilton and Benjamin Moolman blanked Zhang and
Kenneth Lee to get the match started at #3 doubles.
UR's top pair of
Pasquale Procaccino and
Kai Yuminaga evened the team score with an 8-2 win over Leo Romanetz and Nathan Turtledove.
St. Lawrence closed out doubles with a close 8-6 win at #2 from Quinn Bermingham and Heilbronner, who defeated
Connor Wagner and
Antony Georgiadis of UR.
In singles, Rochester took the first two points to edge ahead 3-2. Procaccino won 6-2, 6-2 at #1 over Romanetz, while Wagner won 6-3, 6-2 over Hamilton at #3.
The Saints evened up the team scored when Bermingham topped Georgiadis 6-3, 6-4 at #4 singles, but Yuminaga regained UR's lead with his win at #2. The UR sophomore edged out Turtledove in three sets 6-4, 6-7 (3) and 6-2.
At #6, SLU's Jordan Mamelak defeated Lee to once again even the team score at 4-all. Mamelak won 7-5, 6-2, setting up the winner-take-all match between Zhang and Heilbronner.
